Depends how anal you are about things. You could PPF your car and rock flying out a dump truck could take your whole hood with it. Or smash into your windshield... I have plenty of rock chips on my bumper and one on my hood...but the cost of PPF doesnt seem valuable especially when it comes time to sell it, no one is going to care if you ppf'd it or have full leather....i mean they will bring nomial value. Nonetheless PPF is very effective and will protect that paint. But honestly how much dmage can you inflict on a paint job over 5-6 years thatll youll care at that time point....Others are different, but with the car switchitits I've seen on this fourm, IDK why someone of you take car of your cars, you are in something new next week !.

I've been split on PPF for a while now.. had it on my E46, and E90, but didn't get it on my F80. Granted the F80 was a lease but still... In 10 years of having it on my cars, it has only "saved" me once when there was shit on the 405 freeway and it came flying up. Without the PPF my paint would have been super f-ed.

That said, I don't think it's really worth it. My friend had a E46 330i Sport that had PPF and it got scratched up. His insurance wouldn't cover replacing the PPF but had he not had it, he could have used his deductible to cover the cost of a re-spray.

Is rev match that terrible? I've owned lots of non-rev matched cars but have never drive a red match manual.

Seems to be a matter of personal preference.
Sometimes I notice it. Sometimes I don't.

I've never found it to be so terrible that I would choose DCT over MT.

I don't mind it one bit. Unless you can heel/toe smoothly the auto rev match makes downshifting while braking a breeze. Very convenient when in traffic or coming up to a turn.

Protective film makes it so much easier to keep clean, bugs and road filth don't stick as easily as they do to clear coat.

The F80 M3 is the first rev-matching manual I've owned and I know I'm gonna take serious flak here on this forum, but.....gasp.....I love it!

This car is my DD, I've been driving manual cars for the past 12 years and in rush hour stop & go traffic it nice to sometimes (okay all the time) just relax and not worry about heel-toeing.

There, I said it....... now let me have the hate :

I didn't know what to expect before mine but now I prefer a rev-matching (option) to any other type of manual. It's not perfect, but it's damn close. And after 50k miles on my stock clutch, it had almost no wear - name the last high torque BMW manual trans that at 50k the clutch could have easily gone 150k?

Just for the record, let me re-state what rev-matching does:

1. When you upshift it stops engine speed from dropping below the gear-matched engine speed of the next gear you select providing a smoother transition for ~3 seconds (after which revs drop).

2. When you downshift it detects the gear you are downshifting too and auto-rev matches to that gear's desired engine speed, preventing drivetrain shock and potential disruption/jerkiness in power delivery to your wheels.

The only reason I know of NOT to like this is if you enjoy the satisfaction of rev-matching on your own. Which I do, sometimes. And in which case you want it to be an option.

This news doesn't affect my future decision, I'm waiting to here about if the M3 will get it as well. That might.

I also agree with others that love the rev matching, I'm going to get the Sport + coding if possible to enable it in that mode as well. But, I do get that others don't like it and it would be easy for BMW to just put it as an on/off option in iDrive.

Never liked BMW manual shifters. Even if it had a Honda/Porsche like feel, I'm getting back in a 911. I'm done w/ throwing money away in depreciation.

So you will only drive 5000 miles a year?

Porsche depreciation greatness is on special models and low mileage specials. Look at a c2s at five years and 60000 miles in age - it’s dropped by 50%.

I did PPF/ceramic on my f80 just in case it was the last manual M3. I lease and PPF + ceramic coat because I like to keep things perfect for as long as I can. It's for my sanity, not for a future buyer. My 340i was also in Alpine White and after 2 years had a pocked up front bumper... never again... This was my 1st time doing PPF/ceramic and will absolutely do this to every future car, lease or otherwise...

Rev-matching doesn't bother me. Have owned e46 and e92 M3 in manual as well and still think it's awesome. Have it enabled in Sport+ too (July 2018 production)... whatevs... it's great.

Not having the carbon driveshaft is pretty crappy, though entirely mental.

I think I timed my current lease right... will end in Aug 2021 and hope to get into a the latest model by then. Knowing me though, I'll get the itch and bail summer of 2020 and the current f80 will end up on swapalease or something.

I’m also quite happy that a mt will be offered in the next gen m4. My lease expires in 2021 so the car should have evolved a bit by then. As long as it can be set up as more of a drivers car I’m interested. I don’t care about the luxury features or brand all the much just how it drives (especially on twisty empty back roads). Then again a 911t is quite tempting. Or a cayman gts. Whatever makes me smile the most when I drive it.

I actually like rev matching in city driving situations. Who has the mental awareness to rev match as you brake to let pedestrian cross, drive in residential areas, etc. at relatively low speeds? For spirited driving it's different and easier to rev match on your own as you brake hard into a corner.

I’ve always rev matched myself so it’s something I just do. I don’t think about it, I just do it. Been driving a manual for a long time. Plus at low speeds it’s not something to worry about as shifting at low rpm in traffic doesn’t require much skill regardless of rev match. At speed setting up corners yes. Preparing to pass, perhaps Everything else not so much. People get way stressed over something that’s easy to do once you learn how to do it. If I were racing (not just track time) some form of sequential shift (like a dct) would be my choice as time is everything and I want both hands on the wheel at all times. For fun driving, which is most of my driving on back roads in the m4, I want to control everything Why Bmw forces their decisions on you actually pisses me off a bit. Let’s us turn stuff on and off (rev match. Exhaust open or close, start up mode).

I bought the car to enjoy the art of driving. No other reason

A lot can happen between now and when BMW doesn't make manuals anymore. No sense worrying about it. Might not be alive to see the day...
