I did not ask for them to look at the carrier; they did it on their own.

I suspect that BMW has added this inspection for the GTS given the number of replacements they've had to do.
I think by now BMW knows what's going on. Reason they don't make it a "national recall" I don't know.

I don't believe the cast oem version is compatible with the GTS KW clubsport suspension.

Applies to GTS specific models and does not affect the control arm

Driver side carrier is now cracked - replacement will likely be ordered and part will be replaced (under warranty).

Update: BMW approved the replacement, part ordered, will be here in 7-10 days (from Germany).

Any insight on the way the car was driven/stored or if perhaps camber plates were installed?

Car was stored in a garage and driven only 500 (road) mi over the past year - Dec 19 to Dec 20. Normal driving; nothing close to exerting even moderate mechanical strain on the front suspension. No camber plates.

I'm genuinely curious to see if these are relate to a bad batch of billet aluminum suspension knuckles; perhaps there may be a correlation with VIN numbers.

I know that Studentloan and Bmwaddict had theirs replaced under warranty as well.

What's your last 7 digits of your VIN?

Mine is K579063 and had no issues

K578863, both sides replaced with mileage under 1000. Dealer found the issue during annual maintenance (oil change, brake fluid flush)

Cracked Knuckle

Hi guys,

After five years, I finally bought a GTS and I love the car. It is in very good company of other great track cars already in my collection.
Reading about the knuckle issue has me concerned a bit. My car is under full factory warranty (until 03/2022), with only 3600 miles, VIN K578725.
Is the knuckle issue a batch issue? Does it happen only when the car is tracked (I plan on doing so)? Should I have the dealer inspect both sides (or all four corners)? What area of the knuckle is prone to cracking? Does anyone have pictures to share?
Thanks for your assistance.

Think there are photos shared earlier in this thread, or perhaps another thread in this sub-forum. The crack happens where the coilover is clamped in the knuckle, one of the two clamps cracks such that the coilover is secured by just one clamp. This is just an issue with the front, it has a billet knuckle with some gorgeous machine work that is bespoke to the GTS. I'm not certain what the underlying fault was, either over-torqued at the factory, or an inherently weak design.

I've gone through two sets of tires solely on the track so far, no issues with the knuckles. Good luck with the car, it is a lot of fun on the track and should offer a very different experience from your GT4.

If you are competent on track then get camber plates for the front, and get the thing aligned before hitting the track. Otherwise you will kill your outside shoulders. Additionally, pending budget, convert the CCBs to M2C rotors, aftermarket CCB replacement rotors(I think girodisc might have an option now?), or convert to an aftermarket BBK. I opted for the AP BBK + 18x11 wheels, it was worth the cost in my opinion.

Lastly, make sure to adjust the suspension a bit. 3-way adjustable gives you some options, fiddle with it a bit if the car isn't to you liking. I started with the track-spec defined in the manual, and adjusted from there over a few days.

Seats + harnesses are highly recommended, it was irresponsible(although I guess a legal requirement due to airbags?) to sell the car without buckets that support harnesses out of the box.

How to check your knuckles

This is my recent experience.
PolishM3 prompted me to check them (thanks). Although I had just come out of warranty and had my last check in December. So I assumed it's ok. No way of knowing if that was particularly checked. Car went in storage for winter (only 30 miles since the check).
So I took my phone and extended my arm under the car and captured pictures and examine them. You can probably do a better job with a selfie stick. But I did manage and found the the left front lower one was broken. Took it dealership next day. They replaced both in good will. I did have to pay $1200. Was done in less than a week. Picture below for reference.
The take home messages are:
1. you can check this yourself and
2. better now when the car is close to end or just off warranty.
