think about what you are asking..

how many generations do you think that it will take before BMW can make a metal folding hardtop roof as light as a cloth roof with a metal frame.. ?

Even if the base weights of the vehicles themselves (before roof) were to get back to identical, the different construction for the roof is of course going to cause the newer model to weigh more. So.. the logical answer to your question, is.. likely.. NEVER..... However.... the question itself certainly seems to have an unrealistic expectation.

If I was a convert guy (and I'm not) I would prefer the M4 convert over the
M3 convert.

Good points, although I have 2 thoughts in mind here:

1) Rumor has it that the next-gen Mercedes SL is switching BACK to a folding soft top. I realize that the M3/M4 convertibles follow the 3-series/4-series convertible design but perhaps they might switch back at some point as well. There's clearly a reason for Mercedes to make the switch back (it's not clear what it is right now, especially given its GT nature?) but perhaps that will start a trend...
2) What's probably the MOST realistic scenario is that 1-2 gens from now we'll see a CFRP top on the M4 convertible, which might not shed the full 300-400 lbs needed but might close the gap significantly. That's how I think my "unrealistic expectation" will become a reality. Will I need to be patient? YES. But I would bet on us seeing this become a reality within 2 gens...

Regardless, here's to hoping that their weight savings "focus" proves to be more fruitful for the next gen...

I still don't understand why BMW can't put in LED taillights in these new M3s and M4s, yet the DTM M4s already have them before before we even take delivery of our pre-lci's.

Can anybody explain this?? Do they really purposely leave out the taillights so they have changes to make for the LCI? Is this also what happened with the previous generation? Pre-lci on the E9X looked horrible, but I wouldn't think they purposely design non-led taillights so that they can add led ones for lci. Great logic, BMW, once again.

That is exactly why. This current F8X design has already been in the works for several years. I'm sure the LCI plans are already finalized. And they have been saving the "LED" UpGrades for the LCI ever since the E46.

At this point it is pathetic no doubt, especially when other cars are coming with them standard now. But it's what BMW does.

Exactly, but just like the people driving coupes don't mind the extra 3-400lbs of leather, stereo, power seats, etc

No production car is made for "serious driving" - these cars are built for weekend warriors and wannabes (yeah, yeah, you can gut it, mod it, etc etc, but then it's not an M3 coupe anymore; how many people on this board have done that and use their coupe as a dedicated track car?)

I love my e93 and I'm not a 'serious driver' - I don't track, only canyon drive, but if I did track I'd have a track car not an M3 coupe with A/C & bluetooth.

I would define "serious driving" as professional and pro-am; and those people have dedicated track rigs.

The rest of us are just hobbyists in some form or another. Flame on : )

M4 looks good but the 435 is also good ... Driving it will only tell if it justifies double the fun for double the $$$ (or close to)
