Hoping the experts can weigh in. Feedback is greatly appreciated!

Background:
1.) The lease on my 328i ends 5/1/2019.
2.) Upgrading to a 2019 M4 CP (lease).
3.) Taking European Delivery, meeting the car in Munich on JUNE 1st 2019.

Specifically hoping to understand:
1.) Allocation: When should I engage the dealership to reserve my production #?

2.) There is a gap between leases:
a. The 328 lease ends 5/1/2019.
b. I'll start my M4 lease on 6/1/2019 (when I pick it up in Munich).
Do you think my dealership might allow me to continue leasing the 328 until the M4 delivers to the US? ...or is 328 lease expiration a hard deadline & I'll need to return the car promptly on 5/1? (this is my 1st lease experience).

3.) Feel free to share any additional thoughts or considerations!

Thank you.

1) I just noticed this is all for 2019? Hmm... I would start looking 60-90days before your lease is up. Dealerships will have X amount of allocations and when you do ED, the factory will give you a range of dates to pick from, your not guaranteed X day. So flexibility is a must, as delays with ED happen.

2) That is probably a BMW FS question, give them a call. My experience is a lease is a hardline as its contractually. I recommend just turning the car in, ensure that whatever loyalty credits you have are locked before you do so. Then, just rent a car for a month via Avis or the like.

1 - You should start planning a lot earlier than this, especially if you have a specific date in mind for pickup, want to take advantage of FF miles (since availability is usually lessened the closer you are to the travel date) or doing individual options. Orders can be placed 5 months in advance, and you can request a specific date. Also be sure to make sure you check on German holidays as obviously the Welt will be closed.

2 - Provided you have a vehicle on order, you can extend your lease under the current terms (up to 6 months if I recall correctly).

I am doing an ED in mid-June this year and put in my order at the end of January as I had already booked my plane tickets and wanted a specific date. Note, you can't lock in financing until 60(east coast)- 90(west coast) days prior to the signing of the paperwork, which usually happens a week +/- before you leave.

1) I would start this process ASAP. Summer ED deliveries are a little tougher. The fact that you’re getting an M4 will make it a bit easier.

2)I believe you can extend it month by month for the same payment.

3)Have lots of fun!

His delivery is in 2019 not 2018, so I wouldn't say he needs to start ASAP but definitely should be talking to dealers around November/December of this year.

As to the current lease. Can extend 3 months for shit and giggles and up to 6 with a production number in hand for the same payment/miles.

One thing to note, you get more miles when you extend... e.g for a 36k lease ... you will get an additional 1k mike each month you extend ... so it won't be just 36k miles you have ... worked out well for me since I went over by a little and that gave me extra miles

you won't be able to lock in/reserve till 5 months in advance ... some people have done it in 6 months but last time I did it ... bmw would only allow 5 months reservation for ED

I stand corrected. I thought he was talking about a 2018 delivery

Is a deposit required for the dealership to place the order? ...how much? Assuming it's also non-refundable?

Maybe. There are a lot of variables as to whether or not one is required, mainly your relationship with the dealer (first-time buyer vs. return customer) and the car you are ordering. The more unique the car, the more likely one will be required. If it is something they'll be able to sell easily should you back out (say a M4 black/black with exec and zcp) then they might not require a deposit, vs. an individual or less popular color combo/options package. Also the state your in can come into play, I know here in CA it is difficult if not damn near impossible to keep a customers deposit, so why bother.

If they require a deposit, it'll likely depend on the model, but figure $1k up to $5k possibly (way too much variation to make anything but a guess).

ED always requires a deposit, your CA needs to sell the idea to his SM to release one of their allocation to ED dept. AFAIK, dealer lose some mfg incentive thus they are not even want to entertain ED unless it makes sense for them.

ED on non-M car may requires no deposit, heck it doesn't come from dealer allocation, my CA would give me $500 over ED invoice on 3/4 series all day long but not M3/M4.
My dealer even said no on M2 ED when I bluff them with full US MSRP last summer.

ED does not ALWAYS require a deposit, as I have not put one on my ED scheduled for June. I'll admit I am in the minority, however I am a repeat buyer with a spec that would be very easy to sell, in a state where keeping a deposit is very difficult. That said, I'd agree with your premise that most will likely require one.

No worries. Happens to me all the time. I read things too quickly or I've had a few too many before coming online haha.

Am I missing something? This is well over a year from now.

OP. Start your allocation search 6-7 months from your desired pick up date. Extend your current lease for a few months. Deposit will vary by dealership

1st- deposit is center dependant. Previous relationship more likely no deposit.

Welt date can be reserved up to 6 months in advance. Big variable is are you selecting any individual option (paint/leather/trim)? This will add time. Allocations are released the 1st week of the proceeding month. Do you have a relationship/price with a CA yet, as I would start price shopping latter this year around October/November 2018?

Any BMW FS lease can be extended 2 months with no questions asked with out a production number. What are you going drive during M4 transport back to the US? Once you have a production your 328 lease can be extended up to 6 months. BMW FS will issue a refund for a partial month if hypothetically you extend the 328 until the M4 arrives at your Center.

miked1999...You might want to check with your dealer sometime in late July or early August of this year, just to make sure of the production start/stop for the M4.

I got a copy of the 2019MY production list (not 100% sure if it is official) and it looks like the M4 and M4 Convertible for 2019 will end production in February 2019. So doing an euro delivery for the M4 in June may be a problem.

I believe this is all because the M3/M4 are getting an overhaul for the 2020 remodel.

Share a copy of this list you got. EOP for the F82 has been confirmed for some time now to be 10/20 unless something has changed.

My $0.02, with (almost) three Euro Deliveries under my belt (we're leaving for our third ED on Saturday):

Talk to your dealer sooner rather than later, even if it's before the "official" 5 or 6 months in advance, (depending on who you listen to). This is even more critical if you want to do Individual for paint and/or interior, even more critical if your desired color isn't one of the "standard" Individual colors, but one that you're willing to pony up an additional $5200 (MSRP) for. Individual interiors need more time because Individual interiors are done in batches by a BMW supplier, and that needs even more lead time.

Find a dealer, preferably a high-volume dealer who won't have a problem getting an allocation. Agree on a price (X dollars over Euro Invoice Price) even before you know the MSRP.

Allocations are released the first week of every month and your dealer should provide you with an allocation within that first week of the month after you place your order. If your dealer has a problem getting an allocation, find another dealer ASAP. That should be immediately followed by a production number and a copy of the VIR (Vehicle Inquiry Report) showing you the European Invoice amount (wholesale price). Until you have this you can't agree on an actual price.

There's two parts to placing an order, signing the European Delivery order form where you supply your three desired delivery dates (or in your case just one) and they take copies of your driver license and passport for your and anyone else who is going to be driving your car in Europe. Financial paperwork (finance/lease) is usually done within a couple weeks of your departure date. Note that you can sign the PO before your dealer has an allocation.

After you have your allocation and production number, your dealer should get an e-mail with the subject "Reservation Letter" which will have the confirmation for your desired delivery date. Make sure that he forwards that to you! Don't make any non-refundable reservations, especially airline tickets, until you have a copy of the Reservation Letter.

After everything is submitted you will get assigned a production week. Follow up with your dealer on a regular basis and call BMW Genius to make sure everything is on track. Tell your dealer that you want an update any time the status of your order changes, particularly when it goes into production.

For my 2016 M4 and my wife's 2018 M3, we did not put down a deposit, and her car has Individual paint and interior, although we know this dealership very well, even though we haven't ordered from them before.

Initial discussion started in May last year for a May 2018 ED, but they advised us to check-in with them again in the fall. We checked-in again in September, but for reasons that I don't recall, the PO wasn't signed until early November. Our lower-volume dealer didn't get an allocation in December or in January. Because they didn't get an allocation until February, it turned out that there wasn't enough time to produce the Individual interior for a May delivery. We had planned a May delivery so we could attend the Gran Prix of Monaco. After being told that the car couldn't be delivered until June 12, we opted for a July delivery so now we're attending the German Grand Prix in two weeks. Our delivery date is next week on Wednesday, July 18.

Regarding deposits . . . one may or may not be asked for. As others have said, it's dealer dependent. However, whether a deposit can be non-refundable is state dependent. In my state - which is consumer biased - all automobile deposits must be refunded to the consumer at any time prior to delivery of the car, if requested. Georgia may be different. Check the state's consumer protection website to be certain.
