Progress with unlocking DME?

I'm an idiot, and let the dealership update my 17 M3 comp. I now have software version F020-20-07-525.
Warranty just expired, and I want to grab a BM3 license. most threads on this havent been uodated in the last year. Do I still need to send the DME in for a bench unlock?
Is it still free if I have a license transfered to my car?
I have an email into BM3, just hoping to get more info.

Thanks for the help!

That is what my 18 M3 is on and I had zero issues with BM3. I tuned it a week after the update and haven't had any issues.

I just checked with ISTA and the screen shot is attached. I'm running BM3 Stage 2 93 with no issues. I have flashed a few tunes on it and went back to stock twice, which also re locked the DME when I needed it to.

Looks like I'm a couple revs higher but you should be good.

If you hook up the cable and BM3 can read your SW versions you're not hard locked. If unsure email a screenshot to PTF support and ask them what they see.

Don't need the license to see if BM3 can "see" your DME and read software versions.

I have a 2019 F82 and was able to read my software version via bootmod obd agent. I sent them a ss and they told me I would have to do bench unlock.

Yeah, when I fried my DME and then heard from PTF my new one might be hard-locked (BM3 won't even read) I was crappin until I saw good dates. Luckily BMW builds a replacement DME identical to installed versions, even though the brain was date stickered Nov-2020.

Hi there, how did you get on with flashing BM3? I am in the same situation i want to try BM3 out but i don’t know if i will need to bench unlock my DME.

I have a September 2017 F80 Comp, in January 2021 dealer updated firmware to F020-20-11-557. My question is will i have to bench flash my DME / unlock DME first before i can flash BM3?

I know irunalot has said he hasn’t had any problems and i will send ss to PTP with my software versions once i get a OBD cable. In the meantime for my peace of mind will i be able to flash through OBD without having to bench unlock DME? Im from the UK.

Thanks guys i really appreciate it.

The DMEs that require bench unlock is not just a software version issue, it is also hardware related.
I believe the hardware change came sometime in 2019.
Cars manufactured prior to that can still be unlocked by BM3 (without bench unlock) even if they had a later software update.

My research shows it's a hardware change somewhere in the 2019. Anything built before that date is ok to flash regardless of iLevel/iStep version. I'll see if I can find the exact date.
