BM3 Opinions
I just purchased BM3 today from an old friend of mine for $300 with the e-cable. Got the license transfered and everything. My M4 S55 currently has 42k miles on it and i wana throw on the Stage 1 91 octane tune on the car to gain more power. But with the risk of spinning my crank hub, im having second thoughts... My friend told me spun crank hubs usually begin the cars early miles, but idk how true that really is, just would like some opinions from people who have had previous experience!

If the hub does spin after a tune I think it’s good advice to put the car in neutral immediately to prevent engine damage. I believe that’s what saved mine after I spun my CH. Best of luck though mate, again it’s a very ambiguous issues and many people have gone with stage 1 or 2 without problems from what I’ve seen on the forums and my own thread. Maybe this will help https://f80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1721392

Another crank hub thread!
Wow! Many many many people have run stage 1 tunes for many many many miles, without issues. There are also some rare occurrences of spun hubs on stage 1, but also on stock cars too. More power does seem to correlate with risk, especially once you get into the 500+rwhp range. I ran stage 1 for about a year. Now I'm running the CS tune with some custom (mild) burbles and boost by gear. Lots of fun, without being quite as violent as full stage 1. I might still put stage 1 on later this year if I'm bored! Lets not forget the car had JB4 on it prior. Not dogging you but it was for sure driven way harder than you thought prior to you getting. Anyway, I am in the same boat. I have BM3 and stage 2 93 ready to flash. I have instead been using the GTS flash and am going to get my hub done before i go stage 2. I will also be going full e85 the saem time the hub goes in; no reason not to... In the end it may or may not happen....there is a significantly lower number of folks who spin vs. those who don't. I would say you are safe as would many others. But have the cash ready just in case.... Search will also yield 10,000 different answers to this same question..

Thinking about just putting the CS tune on today with just some simple burble tweaks. Just to play around with BM3, dont think that tune will add enough power to push it over to spin the CH. But its all a guessing game.

Off the top of my head, if you limited the torque in their Stage2 tune by 30% you had the same torque limits as the OEM GTS and OEM CS files. This is what I'd do and I'm pretty sure you would not have issues. |

The 'cause' of the crank hub spinning will be debated for eons but I am quite clear that it's the stupid torque hump at low rpms the S55 is able to produce tuned. |

If you limit the torque in gears 1/2/3 and drive smoothly I think the chances are low. Really it comes down to personal comfort levels. Generally even if you spin it doesn't grenade your engine. I don't have a tune as I don't want to invalidate my power train warranty and I'm happy with the performance, but if I had no warranty would absolutely tune it.

Spun crank hub has happened to brand new stock cars with 2k miles. And on the other hand there are people running stage 2 + and still have the stock CH with no issues.
I feel like it's just an issue based on your luck... I've been running stage 1 for over a year and I do drive aggressively pretty often and no issues here so far. Hope this helps a bit |

Changed mine to be safe. A $3k tab for peace of mind and reliability warrants a potentially more expensive price tag for added damages if the CH did spin. I'd rather be safe than sorry, but that's more subjective for the person than anything.
