How do I get my car's "Black Box" data?

Is there a way for me to pull the driving history from my car via coding cable?

I am also curious about this. I've only found this thread that talks about what's called Order Data Viewer. Don't know if it's included with ESYS or not.

Any procedure on how to do this? I know ISTA reads the fasta data when you hook it up, but is there a way to display the data?

I'm just curious as to why you would want this information?

Curiosity. I'm wondering what exactly it logs. Apparently it logs max RPM for e9x, but on this platform what else does it log?

Does it just hold the last 30 seconds before an accident or longer?

That would be impossible without a crystal ball

I'm also curious about what our vehicles log. It's definitely more than just RPM's. I would guess general data like throttle percentage, mph, max boost, oil pressure, etc. would be logged. Real question is, are BMW Services Centers required to download the information when you bring a vehicle in for service?

Standalone ISTA does not sync with BMW servers, so you would not be able to pull service history.

But, you can pull any previous reports from the same machine if FASTA is enabled and not set to delete.

"Black box" data or Event Data Recorder (EDR) as described in the manual, can only be extracted and deciphered by BMW using special equipment, not even the dealers can do that. But then again, you probably was thinking about something else!

He means the data that each module records for longer period . Similar to the battery related Closed-circuit current monitoring . No idea how to get it from ISTA but if you poke around you likely will find it.

I think, but i am not sure, that EDR data can be downloaded by virtually any person with the proper equipment including NHTSA, police, accident reconstruction experts, etc.

I'll dig a bit to confirm, but does anyone else have knowledge about this?

BMW & Rolls-Royce EDR Data Overview
This section provides general information about the EDR capability of this ACM and the type of EDR data that may be recorded. Always refer to the Data Limitations section of the CDR report for further information about the ACM and limitations of the data retrieved. The information included in the CDR report's Data Limitations section for this ACM is considered to be more precise and current than the generalized information included below. The actual data retrieved from the ACM may differ from what is described below. Review all vehicle coverage notes which are referenced in the Supported Vehicle list for this ACM before attempting to retrieve data from it.

Why?

For me, lots of reasons. The first BMW I bought had a clean CarFax but CLEARLY was wrecked. I didn't figure it out until weeks of ownership, but was info that I could have possibly pulled from an EDR. (BMW states that EDR data is kept even for minor accidents.)

I was shopping for a new(er) BMW last week and the dealer allowed me to keep the car for a few days. In that time, I thought about trying to pull data on it that could help me with my purchasing decision. If I see that the thing is throwing 3 dozen codes and the EDR has info on a wreck, to me, that's extremely relevant.

A kid who was involved in a fatal car accident was put in jail because the black box showed he was going 100+mph right before.

Don't know if this helps, but Carly for BMW has a "Used Car Check" feature that has a lot of information on how the car was driven, any problem codes, etc.
