M4 vs 911 base (991.2)

What's everyone's opinion of the 911?

I currently drive a 228i. Looking into upgrading to an M4.

I test drove a 2017 Carrera yesterday (non-S). It's the updated 991.2 model with the 3.0 turbo engine. The power was definitely there (even though less hp and probably a hair slower than the M4), the sport exhaust sounds incredible.

I am torn, and can't decide...factors I am considering:
-I'm a BMW guy, went through 6-7 BMW's through the years; would I regret the breakup?
-All I hear in the media and from friends is that Porsche is a step up
-The 911 ride definitely felt sorted. It was high quality all around, but maybe a bit tail heavy.
-911 had less room and comfort, it's noticably smaller
-comparable M4 is at least $20k less expensive
-M4 will be facelifted next year, feels foolish to buy one now
-prestige factor, everybody was staring at the Miami blue 911 during my test drive
-trade in, incentives, discounts, and APR is also a factor, I have no idea how BMW and Porsche compare when it comes to haggling

These are the thoughts spinning around my head right now....

I fell the same way about being a BMW car buyer for 18 years. But I looked at some Porsche 911's a few weeks ago and the build quality and performance is a step up IMO. But at the same time you get what you pay for. They are definitely more expensive and when checking the box on the good options they are north of 100k. My dream situation is that I currently bought a f80 M3 MY16 for a DD. And will keep it for as long as possible. I am also thinking of getting a 911 as my true sports car I can take on the track and drive a few days a weeks. The new 911's are just a few steps better in every category when it comes to performance.

I can't see any reason to get an M4 over a 991.2 exept for cargo space!

From people who have driven the 991.2 S i hear its a beast.
One M5 owner said it was faster than his M5.

If you don't mind paying more, get the Porsche. You won't regret it.

Did the same thing as you last weekend. If I can make a deal on a 991.2 I'd be in one yesterday. The one I drove was a 991.2 C2 base with PDK, SC but no PSE. My build would be a low-optioned C2 base in GT Silver with Platinum Satin Carrera S wheels, 7mt, PSE, auto dimming mirrors, smoking package, luggage net in passenger footwell and heated/cooled seats.

Being a BMW homer I think I have owned 9 or so, and on my second Porsche first was a 991S, and now a GT3. If you have the option Porsche hands down, and honestly I'm not a big fan of the HP wars because most can't drive these cars to full capability.

The Porsche drive, and feel is exceptional. If you don't need the room go Porsche, and if you need the room M4. A 991.2 will be fine as a DD if that's your purpose it's very capable. Good luck with your selection.

There really is no "wrong" decision here. Personally I've always felt if I was to get a 911 it would have to be at least an "s". Either way you're looking at a huge step up from a 228, congrats and enjoy!

Buying the M4 simply because you could'nt get the Carrera "S", eventhough you feel that the base Carrera is a better car than the M, that would be a "wrong" decision!

As for me personnaly, the only reason that could possibly make me buy an F8x over a base 991.2 is if I absolutely needed rear seats. In terms of driving dynamics, the M is not even close to Porsche!

I have not seen this, but either way, mighty impressive given the 911 has so much less hp and tq than either of the other two. All comes down to chassis, grip and cornering speeds there.

I'd bet a friendly wager strongly against that. Comp pack isn't going to knock off more than a second vs the regular m3 lap with only 10mm more tire and 20 hp.
Id guess despite the lack of power and tq the base will be faster on just about any track.

I'm trying to justify a 911 C2S Cabrio. I drove a base 911 yesterday and the build quality is fantastic. The drive and manual gearbox were also superb, but I do need the rear seats for my 6 month old son. I don't think the Porsche will work until he's in a front facing seat.

This will be a third car, but I'd want be able to go on weekend trips with the three of us.

Have you driven a CP M4 yet?

They are close but still very different cars in execution. I would drive them again back to back.. and if you can for more than 15 miles.

My thought is your not going to find a "great" deal on a 991.2 until model years end. We all know BMW has great incentives and the leases are pretty good for the competitive set.

Downside is a Porsche is a Porsche and in the end when you service it, use it or try to sell it's still a Porsche and the buyers market won't be similar to a M4 a few years down the road.

Most people or at least this guy, aren't looking for used low feature spec 911's, food for thought.

Either way both are great cars, an nothing wrong with trying something new. I have been eyeing a 911 4s if I can find the right one.

C63s Coupe? Camaro ZL1....GT350R, M2

Never really paid attention to the 991.2 non-S. Surprised to see 4.0sec 0-60 with pdk sport chrono. The non-S sounds like a little beast. I heard Cobb will have a tunes shortly for 991.2.

Only time will tell, biggest issue the M4s pre CP traction issues... Which that most likely has been fixed, but again we need data and reviews of the CP.
