2017 330ix Locked DME

Hi,

I'm trying to do a stage 1 bm3 tune and received this error.

""Based on the software details on your DME, your DME require a bench unlock before you can flash our OTS maps. This process requires you to remove the DME and have a professional bench unlock it via AutoTuner." "

Software version attached. Any help is greatly appreciated. I have friends with the same model year car and no issues with this tune.

Sorry bud, you need a bench unlock. It all depends on the build date and software version in your DME, not your car build date (usually same/similar). If u tell us your area maybe someone here can recommend an independent shop who does unlocks.

question guys, I'm having a little issue while trying to upload the new map that I purchased on my laptop. When I hit the "flash" button and then flash now I get this message "OBD AGENTE UPDATE" and it won't flash. I am running a windows laptop and then the cable straight to the obd. Can anyone help?

Silly but...did you install the newest OBD agent? Is your Ethernet port configured for an IP address? Is all antivirus and firewall disabled? Is car turned to On but not Started? Does the OBD Agent window say "connection to car is UP"?

Yes, I just installed the newest OBD agent this week again, all antivirus and firewall is disable and the car was on but not started. One thing I did not check the IP address on the ethernet port. I will try to do that and see if it works.. Fingers crossed!

Thank you

Have you guys been able to unlock the DME for vehicles that have the dreaded March 2019+ update by that prevents flash tune via obd?

Do you have more details about this? I’m heading to the dealer soon and I need to know if I should avoid a DME update at all costs.

Your bootloader was recently updated at BMW, they're performing these updates when you take it in for oil change or buy a CPO car.

In your case only way to get ANY Flash right now, is to get OBD Patch Unlock by a BM3 Authorized Dealer who have the tools or PTF themselves (if you're willing to ship to them).

What's your location?
I know of 2 shops in NYC/NJ area and 1 in Florida who do a lot of OBD Patch Unlock for the community.

DME with 2019 Update have been able to get OBD Patch for this entire year as well.

Are you currently tuned? If so, then any dealer update will most likely lock out your OBD Flashing capability without a OBD Patch Unlock performed

How do you perform the OBD Patch Unlock? Does this require removing the DME? Is that same thing as bench unlock?

You need a Bench unlock before the BM3 flash can be loaded.

But that unlocking has to be physically disassembling the DME and taking it to someone, right? it can't be done by OBD... right?

The story is that I still have a warranty for another year and if I do this I would lose the warranty...

If I could unlock it simply by OBD, I could always go back when the need arises, but if it means having to physically disassemble the DME, it is more traumatic.

I have seen videos of how the control unit is disassembled and it seems very cumbersome.

Thanks

The DME will need to be pulled and unlocked on the bench (Bench Unlock) via programming. The DME case is not cracked open any longer, this was an old technique used years ago.

Is it because of a software update that bench unlocks are needed? It looks like there are cases it wasn't needed when this feature first came out then it seems random now based on mfr date

Yes, the newest BMW SW updates seem to hard-lock requiring the bench-unlock.

Don't update SW unless it's needed. I've even asked my dealership not to do updates, and I even put a Post-It Note on the speedo so it's not overlooked.
