The drivers side intake tube and the carbon strut bar are removed. The fan comes out thru the top after completely disconnecting all the hoses/lines/plugs in the way, it's a very snug fit. Then you can access the hub. If you are careful you can remove all the bolts and the crank pulley will stay in place otherwise its possible for it to fall off. I held it in place while my friend threaded in the bolts for the capture. Having 2 people definitely helps. When he did his by himself the pulley did come off, the pulley sits on a small ledge on the hub. Then when all done you can reassemble and fill the radiator and intercooler tanks and heat cycle the car and top off again. I see no issue with the capture fitting simply because it can be turned 6 times if the bolts don't line up the first time. I'd say the odds of it not fitting after rotating it are pretty slim.
Thanks for the additional information. Mechanical experience is not lacking here, but I want to know what I'm getting into before I start. I do not have a lift here at the house, so things may be a bit trickier. How much fluid was lost (radiator and intercooler) during the install? Also, are you indicating that you removed the fan from the top? Chris@VargasTurboTech seems to infer that the fan drops out from below.

Yes we removed from the top, there is screws that hold in down on the bottom and it slides into place. It might be able to be removed from the bottom with some work, the area is very tight. For us it seemed best to be removed going up.

Between the radiator and the intercooler it took about 2 gallons total.

Hmmm, quite a bit of fluid. Does anyone know if there is there a bleeding procedure for the engine and intercooler systems?

I have the Vargas Crank Bolt Capture on my M4 since August of last year. I got it installed when I went with pure turbos. I was charged for 3 hours of labor. The car makes 685whp.

Have you spun before? How many miles with the capture?

For those who are interested, I installed the CBC on my F83 this weekend without removing any coolant lines. I also created an install guide which you can find by clicking here.

I just saw the screenshot below in a different thread. Facebook comments say that it had the VTT spline lock kit. So is this the first reported case of failure?

It has N54 which uses the same crank hub (N54/N55/S55 share the same crank hub) and those guys just confirmed on IG that they installed the VTT spline lock kit.

so question is, has max psi or gintani had a similarly public failure after so many years of supplying them

Well, also to be fair, this 135i was supposedly making 828whp. Not sure if anyone is pushing 800+ whp on MaxPSI or Gintani. I'm just surprised about this VTT failure because I kept hearing "something else will fail before this hub slips at those power levels".

The post also said the car was pushing more than 800hp. I seem to remember reading somewhere that the crank hub was not the only part that could slip and it was possible to spin the cam gears as well. I guess we'll have to wait for more information on that vehicle.

Just an update I have been running my car hard for over a year now on VTT-CBC and no issues. Over 700+whp now and ran a 5.8 60-130... (stock engine record I believe) you can check out the races I have had with my car on Instagram or YouTube bmwshogun to see for yourself

When I build my engine I will be going with Max PSI solution though.
