Just enjoy it for what it is. Speed gets boring and if you want to go fast get something else hot out of the box.

And get the 323i running again so you can drive when the 750i breaks. The 750i will likely be expensive to fix so the second car gives you time to try to fix yourself or time to shop around for a good independent mechanic.

I think you've picked the wrong car to soup up. You may need to concentrate on keeping your 7er in good repair -- that can be a challenge for a very complex 18-year-old-car.

On a side note: "Soup-up" is thought to have originated with a slang for injecting drugs (soup) into a race horse.

Cheap/Fast/Reliable
Place your finger over the way you want your car to be, and the rest will reveal itself because you can only have one of the three! You want FAST, well then, it won't be Cheap or Reliable! Want CHEAP, it won't be Fast or Reliable! Want RELIABLE, then it won't be Fast or Cheap! Lol... Bottom line is if you want to "Supe" up a vehicle, you gotta pay to play! Those are the simple RULES of modding a car, based upon decades of experience and observation amongst many friends who've traveled the path. If you chase #'s be prepared to spend spend spend... If you design a plan of what you want going in, and stick to it, that would be great! It will be hard because "Shipwrights" disease easily sets in, lol... Good Luck! |

4500 lb cars with 360 crank hp and auto trans are not great drifters. You may need to hold down traction control for 5 seconds to fully defeat it but this depends on the model and may or may not work for your car.

V8 bellhousing transmission, which isn’t as common so it costs more, pedal assembly, flywheel and clutch, trans brace and mounts, shifter assembly and console surround, and maybe a differential with the right gearing. Ideally, you buy a wreck with all the parts since it is challenging to accumulate them piece by piece. If you can’t DIY, labor is probably a couple of days. If you could DIY, knew exactly what you needed and shopped patiently and carefully, maybe you could do it for as little as $3k. If not, probably closer to $10k.
Sell your cars and buy one that already is close to what you want. There were 6 speed manual 550i V8s. The 2011 128i 6 speed is the last of the naturally aspirated inline 6 manual trans cars. I don’t really know much about drifting — I have done a little drag racing, a little track and been on a skid pad a couple of times. The drifters I have had some contact with use turbo E36, but not convertibles because the chassis are not as strong. |

That is a good point. Some custom work required - shifter console, driveshaft modified for length, possibly some custom mounting of pedal assembly. Not something I would do unless the car has sentimental value well in excess of the value of the car.

The problem is you will get hit with expensive repairs trying to keep this complex old car on the road. Not a good choice for a kid in college. I doubt you will ever get to the point where you have fun with it. And turbocharging it is a really expensive and stupid idea — tuning is required that I don’t think is available, no kits exist, the engine can’t handle it, and the trans can’t handle it. For $25k you can buy an F10 M5, an even more complex car that is also expensive to maintain, but it is newer and twin turbo from the factory.
Probably something like an E46 330i or E82 128i is a better choice for a student on a budget. I’d prefer an E46 M3 or E82 135i, but they cost more and are much more expensive to maintain. Last edited by pbonsalb; 08-15-2024 at 05:56 AM.. |
