Sorry, the guy at Tire Rack which from my conversation was a geek about tires and not just your run of the mill sales agent. The 4S is similar to the PSS with slightly better grip on dry and according to those that have them (yes I know a guy here locally and in Minnesota) that had them pre-release said they are a lot grippier in wet. You do what you want. I know that it is never a 'great' idea to run different compounds front vs rear and def not a 'great' idea to run a stickier tire on the front than the rear especially in wet conditions and RWD.

Yup. Because they are conversations I've had with the engineers that designed the tire.

Well, I couldn't wait any more, and given that I got some info from an old friend who still works at Michelin in Spartanburg SC that the molds for the P4S are almost identical to the PSS (ie, thread widths are likely to be the same), I went ahead and ordered the 265/35 MO + 295/35* MPSS...

-Cheaper
-in stock
-in lease car anyways

oh well

Did you check discount tire for MPS4S stock? I guess they have their own warehouses. Dropped wheels off a few hours ago to have mine installed. 1350 out the door which is cheaper than the tirerack price for just the tires.

Oh, your equivalent of "the guy", lol.

And with all your contacts you couldn't help @dmk08 out in his time of need...

Yeah, great contacts.

discount tire prices (at least last nite on the site) were not any cheaper than tirerack, and they don't have the 285/35R19 size available for the P4S

Tire rack have published the tread widths for the PS4S.

I speculate the ideal setup for 20" wheels will be a 265-295/30R20 combo.

Those 295 20" have a 11" tread width, which is 1.1" wider than the stock 285/30R20 CP PSS. The 285/30R20 PS4S have a much narrower tread width at 9.8", which is actually 0.1" narrower than the stock CP rear PSS.

I speculate the ideal setup will be 265-295/35R19 or 265-295/30R20.

Those 295 in both 19" and 20" have a 11.1" tread width, which is the same as the 295/35R19(*) PSS that I have on my car and a whopping 1.6 wider than stock. The 285 have a much narrower tread width at 10" and 9.8" for the 19" and 20" respectively which is just 0.3"~0.5" wider than stock.
Hopefully they redesign the PS4S to become a M5 star spec..

The reason why I would gravitate to a M5 Star Spec 285 PS2 or M5 Star Spec 295 is that they have been designed to fit smaller 9.5" and 10" wheels.

I just picked up my wheels with the freshly mounted PS4S. Will post some pics up in the Signature Wheels thread once I put them on the car.

You are right, I misread the 295/30R19

I edited my OP to fix this. Thanks for pointing it out.

According to TireRack, 295/30/20 PS4S has 11" tread width while Star Spec 295/30/20 PSS has 11.6". I mean probably PS4S is still a better tire but 0.6" difference is not that small.

These 295 PS4S look wider than my old RE11 305s. No real measurements tho.

The 305 RE11 or RE71 are 11.1 tread width, so they are pretty much same as PS4S in 295 (11.0''). The shoulder protection on the PS4S makes them look wider for sure!
