Congratulations. The Pure cars are amazing value. Really amazing. And one of the best colours too.

Great price at $119k. But it will be interesting to see how much the price changes over time.

Hi everyone, new to the forums. Sorry if this is slightly off topic but here goes.
I sold my mk6 golf r recently that I use for track days 4-5 times a year and it's my daily as well.
Thinking of getting an M2 or demo M3 but I'm torn between the 2. Anyone have any experience with driving both M2 and M3 extensively on highways and use it for track as well. From what I gather M2 might be a more connected track car but M3 is a more comfortable beast ready to be unleashed..

Hi

I’ve been lucky enough to drive a 2017 M2 manual around the Alpine roads of Mt Buller, Hotham and Falls Creek in summer and M drive day at Philip Island.....my own car is 2017 M3 ZCP DCT.

I found M2 to be ok connected but quite peaky. In low RPM there was little torque (say from 1800 RPM). It would drive me nuts to try and daily it. Maybe something to do with it’s Turbo setup compared to M3.

M3 to me doesn’t feel like a Turbo. No lag. No torque valley at low revs.

Handling wise, whilst M3 gives the feeling of being honed from a solid piece of granite, the M2 under hard braking in Philip Island (M Drive day) felt very squirrels and loose under heavy braking.

Not hating the M2. Lovely car but you get what you pay for. Pay more for M3 (Comp pack especially) and you get a whole lot more than M2.

Agreed. The M2 feels very lazy unless you're getting stuck into it. And when you're doing so, it doesn't feel as stable as the M3/4.

As someone that has come from an M2 pure to an M4 pure, the M2 felt a bit more lively down low (single turbo plus a shorter 1st gear) than the M4, but I agree with the loose feeling. Certainly not as honed as the M3/M4, but that's also why it's so much cheaper.

M2 was fun though and had its own character with the N55. I think that is going to change with the S55 now which may be a shame.

However, the M4 is a completely different beast and whilst I am still getting use to the car, it's a step up from the M2. That's why I didn't go with an M2 competition as I feel it's too expensive and it's going to lose its unique character that it had with the N55.

So in conclusion, if you can get an M3/M4 for a good price, then go with that!

+1 this - Having driven both extensively on road and track multiple times (on long loaners before purchase) and now own an M3 Comp, i agree a discounted M3/M4 is excellent value for what you get)

My comparison was between the M2 and a JB4 N54 135i, so perhaps not an apples for apples battle.

Thanks everyone! I did drive the M2 and M4 comp a year plus ago but i wasn't real sold on the M4 being a much bigger car and difficult to place on the road. Will go test drive them again i think I'm pretty much set on a used/demo M3 hopefully with competition pack.

With all this competition between AMG and Alfa, I will be interested to find out pricing on the next gen M3. One thing is for sure we all benefit from this, great bang for buck.

So if the Pure is under $120 drive away, what’s the going price for a Competition?

Saw one I liked on the floor of a dealer on the way last, I called and all I got was the RRP price of $168,000 (it’s a special colour) which is obviously dreaming... What should I be offering, $130?

Did it have any options? I assume no Ceramic Brakes.

$130k is basically a safe price to buy a 2018 M3 Competition.

You can try $125 and work up another $5000 if you feel generous

But in all seriousness, $130k is what most dealers are doing now. If your dealer plays hardball, there will be 5 others ready to do business.

Thanks mate, great info to have. I need to check but I believe no options apart from the special order colour.

the only issue at the moment from what im hearing from my dealer, is that most dealerships are reluctant to let them go at rock bottom as they know what stock they have coming and thats it (all their allocations are now placed - production stops in 2 months).

with no new M3 available in australia till 2021 (late 2020 release apparently) that is a long time between models, they may be willing to hold onto a few.

that said, 160k is nuts - tell him he's dreaming!

As HiFi said, I struggled to get 130k around 2-3 months ago and that was with two well known dealers. I wanted to upgrade my 2016 and get a comp pack, especially with the upgraded headlights and darker wheels. But just fell short in negotiations, even as a returning M3 customer.

Especially since a few weeks before I started shopping people were picking up brand new comp packs for 120k so I wasn't prepared to pay a premium of 10k+. So I just stuck with my 2016 and continue to enjoy that.

I would strongly recommend a car broker in these situations.

When dealers are being dicks the broker will usually get the price I'm after.

Thanks guys. Great forum you have here!

I do know one broker but think I’ll just deal direct as the car is on the floor at this dealer... Have made an offer and if I get it I do, if not, no dramas.

Can you recommend a good broker? My partner is in the market for a new Golf GTI.

"people were picking up brand new comp packs for 120k"

People weren't picking up CP's for 120, ever. Just below 130, urban myth, but maybe. Persistence, right place- right time and repeat orders got me to ~130 on road - where I was happy. Times have moved on as now the market is spread - M2, M2CP, M3 Pure, M3, M3 CP, M3 CS mean they don't have to beg for a sale. BMW Melb now not factory, BMW Syd not far off? Returns have to be made, just not "sales for numbers". End of production to increase values? I hope so. New model in .Au 2020? "I better hang onto mine longer" think how many?

It'd be nice, but no one said "drive away". There's about 30k in "taxes" (lct, stamp, gst etc). The magic 20% discount people lust after with BMW - this is WAY beyond that.
