Honestly, it messed with my perspective when I first drove a E90 M3. I got so used to the power of the F8X that the E90 felt so damn slow although I knew it was not.

I currently own a 2015 Cayman S with a manual. It has an upgraded suspension and Soul exhaust. I also have a manual 2017 M3 competition and after driving the Porsche I realized how terrible the manual transmission on a BMW really is. It's so bad that I am contemplating trading in my M3 for a dual clutch M4.
Also I love the naturally aspirated engine. This is my first ever naturally aspirated engine and I have to say I prefer it over turbocharged. I've owned six or seven turbo cars in the past and I have to say I prefer not having any turbos. But the M3 is hard to beat if you are looking for one car that you can drive with your family. But if you're looking for a unique sports car I think they cayman S is one of those secret gems that only true car nuts will understand. I plan on holding onto mine for a long time. I call it my mini GT3 |

Not two things that can be put together and compare, do with your second choice, if your first choice is good enough then you won't have a second one, so go with the second one

Thanks for all the replies, unfortunately I wasnt able to test drive the cayman as it was sold, these cars price has gone up and harder to find especially the GTS. After reading numerous opinions I think I will have to drive the car to decide if it is the car for me, something about the look of a Cayman and NA H6 just really attracts me.

The best shot is to keep bugging your dealership to see when/if they get one and get there asap when they do. These cars definitely needs to be test driven first before you decide. You have to act extremely quick though, there are buyers out there that will pay markup to snatch it up before you even have a chance at it.

Haven recently had a 718 GTS Boxster for a weekend and drove it back-to-back with my M3 CS, I can confirm the consensus in this thread. The Cayman/Boxster feel and handling is superb. The lack of space and creature comforts for longer drives did bother me a bit, but that's not what this car is for. I took it through the canyons and it was sublime. The GTS was a 6MT and my M3CS is a DCT, so I couldn't really compare the transmissions, but the 6MT was smooth and satisfying.
The Boxster did allow me to feel a new appreciation for the M3 CS however. It truly is a car that does everything. It's just brutally fast vs the Porsche, handles almost as well (modifed) and has the creature comforts I have come to enjoy. If you are trying to choose between the two, it's tough, but you can't really go wrong either way. You're going to have a good time behind the wheel of either.

There is no substitute to an M car or a Porsche rear motor! Okay, that is a qualified no, because there are other substitutes for an M car, but there is no for a rear engine car cayman - perhaps an upgrade - a 911!

I have had both. Like everyone already stated. Two totally different cars that serve different purposes. I have a 2016 981 Cayman GTS and it is 100% more enjoyable than my E46/E90 or F80 M3 ever was. The pdk is light years ahead of the DCT and the you feel really connected to the car. Only reason to get a M3 is the need for 2 more seats. IMO the GTS is perfect in terms of power and overall standard options that come with it but it does come at a price because they are rare. The extra 15 hp over the S feels a lot more than just 15 HP. I am going to keep this for a bit so went ahead and added the full GT4 aero package. The Porsche purists ofcourse hate me now but who cares. Love the car.
I would get the GTS over the S. It comes standard with a lot of great options like the PSE, alcantara interior, etc. and looks the part. The S in comparison looked dated unless someone spent a fortune getting all the options but then you are paying for a GTS so might as well get that.
