If I'm going quartz, I'm a huge fan of the niche Bathys Benthic both because it's hand built in hawaii, and also because it's BOMB proof and built to clearly see in the depths.

I have the titanium with kevlar band and that thing is baller, but it's not a business watch in any way, it's a jungle and dive watch. That watch doesn't get dinged, it dings other shit

Yeah I'm looking for a nice watch to wear in meetings and stuff. Don't want to spend a lot but also don't wanna look cheap.

IMHO you can't do better for nice looking (and good quality) watch for little money than Tissot. They have both Quartz and Mechanicals. Most of the Quartz watches are less than $1K - many less than $500. Nice looking classical watches on a reasonable budget.

Awesome recommendation - i'm a big fan of their seastar which is < 1000, but a sport watch

and, as long as we're doing watch porn, because i'm an engineering geek super nerd, I've pretty much decided if I get an expensive watch it's going to be a Graham Chronofighter Skeleton Superlight, ~10k.

The dorkness is breathtaking:

They also do vintage nose art watches ... Anna seems particularly alluring ....

Maybe if I do more diving ...

Looks like a nice dive watch. I love a good dive type watch. I loving able to tell the time in a dark room just by looking at the illuminated dials
Probably the most masculine kind of watch.
I Remember my first Dive watch, the worst one ever. A G-Shock. The original G-Shock. Very thick and masculine looking. But when you actually dived, you couldn't see it in semi murky water. Completely useless in Canyon Lake, just outside of San Antonio.

That's baller! I had one super similar but it wasn't a g-shock ... at the time I was more about Reverse Polish Notation.

We still search for the original 48g or gx online when one quits working in the office. They actually have an app for a 48g for your phone! I still have mine from college!

Anymore, the new engineers we hire are using some other god forsaken brand that I can't even remember...we don't pay them as much.

I don't know why, but that reminded me of this instructional video of how to remove a parking wheel boot:

Had a Casio watch with calculator back in the day. Had (and still have) a HP calculator with RPN on full display. 19B in my case.

Sandy Hook parents are suing Alex Jones for defamation after years of him spreading the bullshit that the shooting never happened and the parents are lying. These parents have received death threats as a result of this sick shit.

Hope they get every damn penny he’s ever made and ever will make.

I haven't slept a full night even by my standards for a month now. My son has an appointment with a specialized dentist and a surgeon that handles jaws (see, I ran out of vocabulary.) next week and I'm basically running on fumes.

Julian is nearing the age where they'll start correcting his jaw. I clearly have traumas about his first year and I keep waking up when I remember discussions with the specialists we visited all the way back then. I'm not a complete idiot, so I do realize the doctors back then were giving me valuable information from their specific angles. I'm so dyslexic I always had these long lists of words memorized in order and because I couldn't take notes from meetings and I didn't trust my memory alone with no assistance, I as an extra precaution crossed over from my list the words the doctor used so I could have a more perfect recollection from each appointment. It takes about 2 days here for the hospital to send by mail the appointment notes and diagnosis, so i did that all to have the two extra days to study.

Last spring Julian had his usual appointment to his oral surgeon. He held a ruler to his face to determine the nose jaw line, then he took a pencil and marked his teeth with two, about 1mm long lines, and asked my son to move his jaw to left and right so he could measure the movements of his jaw.

I wasn't trying to be extra dramatic, that's exactly all that happened. I didn't sleep for three weeks before that appointment without nightmares. Some random crying happened when in the woods with the dogs.

That's what happens when a kid is born with microtia, and for 7 years now has been healthy, smart, doing epically and has no heart condition, his limbs are growing beautifully, he has friends, he annoys the shit out of me daily and today started at 4.45 am with a discussion about atom masses and how gold and silver have a different mass (I know nothing about the topic. He was informing me of his latest interest while I was attempting to figure out how a coffee maker works). And then we fluently discussed the plane that did the emergency landing (thanks rd for the article!).

My son is missing an ear. An ear is about a 0.5% of a person. They are missing 100% of their children.

I have no clue how those sandy hook parents go on. Their whole world was crushed, and then for five years they have had to listen to this AJ bs. I had a hard time hearing the doctors telling me shit, and my son was very much alive. It tells you a lot about them as people that aj is alive and breathing. It amazes me every time a new clip of him talking about sh shows up in my news feed.

Anyway here's a similar like-for-like comparison, the Patek Philippe Calatrava and A. Lange & Söhne Saxonia. Who the fuck would take that chunky Patek over the jaw dropping slender elegance and beauty of the Lange??

Bravo, you clearly know your watches. A Lange is definitely worthy of respect. Plus they have the additional advantage that you can actually BUY one

(Full disclosure I’m about 2 years into a 4 year wait for the Patek I posted above. No money down so I can decide when my name comes up. Plus when it does I have to apply to PP. Resume, why you like the watch etc. I think they do this to limit grey market resellers - which definitely exist - if you’re willing to pay a $10k upcharge you can get a grey market one in two days).

Anyway, in spite of all that I could see myself switch to a Lange 1 with moon phase at some point. Lange does a better job than anyone at beautifying the movements. The only “downsides” are; a) Hitlers watch. You probably know that this fact brought down the company for several decades. More just an interesting historical footnote. b) more importantly, historically they have not had the same resale as Patek. They are both STUPID expensive but with a Patek you can genuinely consider it an investment. A Lange have not historically held value as much but this seems to be changing.

Of course, if you buy second hand, this says... go for the A Lange you will get better value.

Anyway I love both. Here's my fav;
