Used F80 Prices in the coming months?
Hi all, new here. Current F30 335i owner looking to buy an F80 M3 Comp.
I was wondering what your opinion on the coming prices of the M3's are predicted to be. Will the new model lower the prices in the coming months, or is it ok to buy now? Thanks |

I'm in the market as well and it is hard to say. I'm coming from a B8 S4 6MT. I can tell you that the loss of both the manual trans and DSG in the new B9 S4 seems to have kept B8/B8.5 prices strong. As someone who is probably going DCT due to left knee problems, I'd much rather have an F80 DCT than a G80 with the ZF auto. If others are likeminded, F80 prices will stay strong on the auto side. You didn't specify a transmission preference. Since the G80 will still have a manual option, manual drivers won't have to stick to the F80 to get three pedals.

No one knows for sure. However, I think it's safe to say that any remaining F80's still on the market when the G80 launches will likely see price reductions in order to get the new and used inventory off dealer lots. But with a reveal scheduled for September 2019, I anticipate it's still another 12+ months from now before most people actually get their hands on the G80s and you start seeing dealers/private party sellers start to drop prices on new/used F80s.
So, if you are in the market now and find one you want for a reasonable price, go for it. If you are willing to wait 12-14 months, then you can probably get an F80 for a few grand cheaper. With that said, I considered holding out but ended up stumbling across the perfect F80 for me last week. 2017 M3 6MT with 7800 miles and in immaculate condition. KBB and NADA had it valued between $54k and $56k for dealer retail. I ended up getting it for $52.4k and was quite happy with that. I do imagine this same car would be around ~$5k cheaper once the G80 is released. But I wanted to get into one now, so I took the plunge.

S4toM3: That sounds like a great deal. I'm still searching. I'm in no rush so I'm waiting for the right car to show up. I may still go drive a 6MT to see what it is like but I really do think I'll end up going DCT. If a clean Comp pack San Marino or Yas Marina pops up, I'd be mightily tempted. Tempted to just wait until CS's come off lease honestly. My S4 only has 44k miles on it so I'm in no rush.

I can't blame you. You've got some time. In my case, my '14 S4 was just about to hit the big 75k mile service. In addition, it needed new wheel bearings and some other suspension crap to keep running properly. Rather than dumping the few grand into it, I chose to make a move to something new and wash my hands of it. It truly was a great car, though. If my S4 still had sub-50k miles on it, I probably would have held off another year or so.

I bought a 2018 loaded M3 with 500 miles on it with a 96k sticker on it from a private seller last week for 69k. Deals are out there for this outgoing car.

It is always "ok" to buy now. Buying now means you have that much more time enjoying the car, vs. sitting around without the tire-burning joy of an F80 while you try and predict the future and wait, and wait, and wait some more to save what's likely going to be a very marginal amount of money.

The S4 bothered my knee a little in traffic, so have a few other cars, but not the F80. I think the ergonomics are better, sort of varies from cars, but F80 clutch/seating position is really good, IMO. YMMV, but that was my experience. |

Like 2-3 months ago there were a ton of used 2015 F80s in the mid to high 30s. Then all of a sudden their all gone and just higher priced once around 42-45k for ymb auto.
What do you guys think is the best value? I'm looking to pick one up this November December. 2015 2016 or 2017?

IMO the best value is a low mileage, well optioned 2015. You'll get 80% of the car you'd get off the showroom floor right now at a fraction of the price.

I would still say high 30s-50s depending on the year. M cars don't depreciate as hard as a normal BMW. Once the G80 is released, the F80 will dip a little bit more but I wouldn't say it's a dramatic dip. For example a used E92 is still around (2008s Being)25-30k in my area, but the F82 M4 is around 40-50k.

15 well optioned sounds good. What sounds better older low miles or newer more miles?

I would look for maintenance history over age or miles.
Otherwise I would choose higher miles since they seem to unfairly depreciate with miles. M car prices are very sensitive to miles. Or lease new. Seems like deals are solid. I didn’t follow any of this advice though. I just picked up a slightly used F80. 2018, ZCP, 6sp and 3500 miles. It was what I wanted so I got it. M performance package (w/ MPE) and 763Ms sealed the deal. Depreciation schmepriaction - I am gonna enjoy myself. |
