Having sampled the new M4 and owned/own E92 M3 and F10 M5, i feel that the M4 is the one that came out worst with this turbo charging. The M4 is in every conceivable way, far better than the E92! Cant say the same abt the sound it makes unfortunately. In sport plus throttle, i find the car down right noisy and intrusive. I am waiting on the LCI + comp pack and hopefully, a decent perf exhaust to improve on things.

I was going to comment on that also. I don't believe they are mutually exclusive either and maybe not accurate. I am 67 years old, fully retired and was fortunate enough to have saved enough money to buy an M4. (Not Young Urban Professional with money)

This is my 15th BMW and if someone had told me when I bought my first one for $6,000 that some day I would buy one for $75k, I would have said they were nuts!! That's twice as much as my first house cost!!

Times change and so do M cars, but that doesn't mean it is a bad thing or that BMW has "lost sight of the M spirit".
In Australia, the M4 costs over 180k plus on road costs!

I rarely post negative comments, but that was a snooze fest.

Now THAT is funny!

My reaction was similar, except I kept watching a little longer.

One thing I noticed in this video; they constantly talked about comfort, looks, and engine... Where is the focus on handling people? The original M3 was no powerhouse, it was a scalpel. Now everyone is all engine...

Yeah, I am familiar with the split. I can see a 12c as 'only a super car' though it is borderline hyper (not quite a zonda but....almost as rare as the typical hypercar).

Anyway, though Top Gear mag did keep one for a year as a DD, the fact that doing so was a gimmick tells me it isn't really a DD.....it is a super car (if you prefer) that can be used everyday, but that is something different.

180k is a real bargain compared to what we pay here

Wrong.

The E30 is a soft luxo barge.

In my view, only my Model T captures the true spirit of a car. You pansies don't even use a crank any more - all "ooh fancy dancy electric start with a 'key'"

Feh. Keys? Keys?

In my day, keys were for pianos and butlers. You wanted to start your car, you got up and cranked that bitch up to get 'er going. Nothing like a good mop of sweat to show you had EARNED your right to drive.

And another thing, our wheels were wood. That's right. If I can't grow a replacement tree and cut and shape my own wheel on my stream-powered lathe, it is just pampering. Laziness, pure and simple, to expect some "factory manufactured" wheel to just magically show up at "the shop".

Things were much more pure and raw back then. These modern cars are glorified living rooms on wheels.

I love my M4 more and more each day even the shittiest day turns good when you feel all that torque at your disposal and the handling is perfect! That said i still give a thumbs up and turn my head every time I see an E46 M3 even after all these years that design and noise is intoxicating.

The new M4 is easily the fastest and most sophisticated of the three cars. I suspect years from now the E92 will be the most coveted by collectors because of its high revving V8, a species becoming extinct due to the emphasis on efficiency.

The M1 was the first M car and when the M3 came out, it didn't carry forward much. Did that mean that the E30 didn't have the "spirit of M"?
They talk about last 2 generation of M3 then they use a M4 instead of a M3 to show the M spirit is that dumb too? lol When you see a New generation of course its always more powerful, more faster, more comfortable, more of everything. This is more of a advertising show.

Somebody obviously doesn't understand the new numbering scheme...

This.

There was almost no "comparison." Certainly very little as to performance.
There were "comments" and "likes." Not the same thing.

For my time ... I would have found the article far more informative with the three people driving and commenting on the cars they did NOT own or bring. THAT would have been interesting and valuable.

(SCBMW02 - agreed. The E36 variant is the lost, overlooked, hidden child of the bunch. A sweet combination of increased power and light weight. It is too bad that almost all of them have been subject to a huge number of miles and many cheap mods. Very few left in good stock condition, which means fewer people will know of the generation's capability.)

Yes the F80 is an evolution as a street machine but none of these guys are qualified to claim that it's an evolution of the "spirit of M". The fact that is it so street friendly is the 1st indication that its M spirit has been lost a bit.

Now before you get too excited let me just say that it is very likely that I will replace my ZHP with an F80 so this isn't just a plain on blasphemy. But you will never get me to relinquish my E30 M3... talk about an M spirit.. those that never owned one (or very few other older M models) will never understand what that term means.

Now.. put on your seat warmers.. adjust your bolsters... set your destination in the nav... and go enjoy your m spirit.

What's the spec on your E46 M3? I'm going to be looking for one shortly.

After all these years I have still kept my E46 M3. I just can't come to terms with selling it. Only car I am willing to trade it with is a 650i GC or M3 Sedan. Lol may very well lease for once.
