Exactly. My biggest dilemma is do I keep the M2 and try to break into the very rare (because of the post-crash economy of the late 2000s) but lovely 997.2 while it's turning the bottom of the parabola or do I go for the new 992 and the European vacation of a lifetime?

I have rarely seen Porsche slip up much, even in their long history they have never gone completely sideways. Only that egg headlight 996 thing is the one that kind of stands out but that isn't nearly as bad as all the slip ups BMW has made in comparison when it comes to design.

Yeah you can say the whole SUV thing, at least most old school Porsche fans complain still but, we all know the economics. More than half of Porsche sales ARE their SUVs. It allows them and their GT division to do their thing without being hindered nearly as much by their numbers people. Yeah EU regulations suck but what can you do.

Even more recently, Porsche has done more than enough most of the time to compensate for a mistake on their part.

As BMW goes more down wind, seeking to grab all of the market, Porsche is able to do both without compromising what their heritage has always been. 911. Though from what I know, the current 992 chassis is shared with the 718 to some degree. So, it isn't completely bespoke but hey, none of us are complaining.

I’m halfway out the door myself. Just trying to be responsible with my pennies.
Part of me kinda regrets not pulling the trigger on a 991.1 C4S for 68K and a CS for 63K that I was looking at before I got the M3. But family and kids come first so M3 it is.

But I’m there. If I replace the M3, its likely for P-car.

We talked about this many pages back. I had said that especially with this EV transition, all ICE car brands are at risk. They must execute well or fade as time passes. That BMW analysis I did tells you that the company is struggling.

Do any companies make a better looking shift knob than OEM Carrera shifter?

Congrats to those jumping ship. I went from an OG M2 to a first gen Cayman S and while the M2 was commendable, the Porsche is simply in a different stratosphere as it pertains to the driving experience....and it's a measly "cheaper" P. The new 992, in any iteration, is I'm sure, worth the price tag and waiting period to acquire one.

I assume you mean for a PDK? That's a good question, it is an odd looking thing.

I have the Porsche factory CF shifter knob for a 6MT and love it.

That push up for up shifts and pull down for downshifts. I could never understand why Porsche does it. Along with left hand ignition switch. Not natural at all for me. But it’s forgivable.

For the gt cars they do the opposite. I guess it’s the logic of a race car driver and normal intuition

So I thought the 718 was exiting production this July and just found out there will be a 2022MY. If the GT4 or GTS 4.0 are available for ED next summer, I will probably go that route. Likely the latter for overall comfort. Python Green with Satin Aurum wheels over full espresso leather. The naturally aspirated engine is just too much of a draw. And my skis actually fit in the back of a 718...even the big powder skis.

I'm referring to the 7MT knob. Any photos of the OEM carbon fiber knob? I was hoping to find something similar to how BMW's M Performance knob looks.

I'll take a pic later and post tonight. Dunno if it is the same as the 911s, but I'm guessing they are pretty close.

This is a go to place for OEM Porsche parts and accessories:

https://www.suncoastparts.com/

Also check out the vendors on Rennlist.
Prices are about double than comparable BMW M prices.

Thanks bro. I've never seen the carbon fiber knob before. Porsche knobs are so big.

I’m sure you will end up with a P car… Of course i am just messing with you.

This thread has turned out to be a great source for Porsche newbies such as myself. I test drove a 718 cayman s recently, it’s my first real experience driving a p car. I liked it :-).

I once drove and had the opportunity to buy a Cayman R and I have regretted not pulling the trigger. Instead, I have continued my revolving door of M cars. I have never driven a 911 and I'm sure they are awesome, but the Caymans I have driven have been awfully impressive.

Left side ignition is because of racing heritage. Old racing starts would be who could start and get off the line first. Putting the ignition on the left meant your right hand could already be on the shifter.

I knew they were reasons behind it just dont know it until now, thanks. Yeah our Macan GTS my wife drives is heaven when I get the chance to use it. It’s just feels really solid. The little quirks are not really an issue. I just get to compare it every time I switch cars.

Notwithstanding that BMW is clearly turning their backs on car enthusiasts, they likely don't see Porsche as a direct competitor for the M3/4 and those that have left BMW for Porsche would have done so anyway. Against true competitors like the C63, RS and those driving MSport, C43, Audi S models looking to move up, they likely think the G8x is still tops and the bugs bunny face will grow on them.

I hear you man! my biggest take away from the experience is they are dramatically different cars, at least an M4 to a 2019 cayman s. P cars are absolutely next level and have become a long-term goal of mine to own one.

I say congratulations to anyone here who has owned one or about to own one, they are in a class all by themselves …The niche between exotic and BMW Mercedes etc.
