Too paranoid?
Featured on BIMMERPOST.com Just had a question for all you drivers out there. Is it just me or does anyone else feel more reluctant to go into certain suburbs with this car? What I Mean by this is, in Australia there are certain suburbs/areas known to have a lets say higher risk rate than others. With this new car, I am a little bit more worried about parking it in certain areas now. With my old car, some reluctance but with my new one even more so. Am I just being too paranoid and should just suck it up or am I right to be more careful? lol |

Well, what was your previous car? The way in which you asked the question suggests this is a big upgrade for you, but obviously that won't be the case for everyone here. If your old car was indeed a beater of sorts then, yes, you'll have to be a bit more conscious of where you leave your ride than you have in the past. Common sense should be a pretty decent guide here I think.
Additionally, we haven't gotten specifics on the types of areas you are talking about. There is a big difference between a low income area with generally honest people and an outright ghetto. If you are frequenting the latter on your leisure time, well, I'd have to wonder if you might want to rethink your affairs and priorities. If you are just visiting a buddy in a blue collar town, seems like much ado about nothing. |

I have homeless in mine all the time, I go to really bad areas and drug houses, and always in my austin yellow car. I did kick a knee in once because this idiot tried to to me, but I doubt he was after my car.
You'll be fine.

From the famous words of Hunter S. Thompson:
"There is no such thing as paranoia. Your worst fears can come true at any moment." If you have that sinking feeling and you can't explain it, that's because God created it for a reason. Act/Behave accordingly. Most CEO's are overly paranoid. You are in good company. |

Anyhow, it's not a car that looks big $$$, just keep the cabin free from bags,iPads etc. or anything that looks like it's valuable and you'll be fine. If hijacking is a concern, well any BMW can get you in trouble in the wrong area. I lived in Johannesburg and drove a Beemer so I know a bit about it. In Aussie I wouldn't worry though, unless it has changed dramatically to the worse. Last edited by solstice; 01-29-2015 at 11:29 PM.. |

LOL
Lups and mkoesels comments just cracked me up. It was a fair upgrade from my previous car. It was a C250, while both cars are considered fairly upmarket one is $72000 and one is $174000 so more than twice the value warrants more than twice the paranoia i guess. I do appreciate the responses though ill try to just relax a bit more. I think it is effecting my ability to enjoy the car. Loved that Ghetto comment |

To be fair, I have (had) my dog with me always when I went to bad situations. She was trained to protect me, but sadly I had yo put her down months ago. Now I'm hunting a dog to train so the safety issues goes away again. I don't do guns but I'm pretty good at holding my own. It's the Perkele in us all, as you should know with your Viking heritage.

Now, after that rant it will be needed to mention I usually park so far away from anyone, I might as well walk to my destination. Its so pathetic but not as bad as me going through the morning ritual "hi pups, breakfast is ready, put your clothes on, school time. Oh, when you go to the car DO NOT TOUCH THE PAINT.Now, brush your teeth..."

Sorry about the dog and hope you find a good substitute, you can't replace dogs but with some luck you'll find another good fellow to look after you and Peter. |

Just don't go west lol stay out of paramatta or super dense areas full of Yabbos like coogee. I mean if it gets all dinged up its your own fault for parking tight in Williams Bay or something like that.
Everywhere in Sydney is alright, there are just a fair amount of jerks around. My car would always have beer cans and stuff on it and I've always been in darlinghurst or surry hills. It gets bad after cricket/rugby matches or after people swattle on by from Oxford Street |

Generally speaking, while I agree that one has to suck it up and go where you want as you'll be fine, I would recommend avoiding the crack houses

I find people seem to respect my car and in six years no dings or any car even parking close to it. Common cars are stolen more often for parts or way higher end cars for export.
