BUT if BMW today speaks in the case of the F8x about an "heavily" modified N55 as basis and you also know that only cost reduction were the reason to choose this engine alternative ... it seem clear that "this engine" must be the cheapest possible way to reach the needed ~450hp ... so "heavily modified" meens in my opinion:
- stronger engine block/crankcase by puting struts on the outside
- better/greater Turbos-system by using the TriTurbo of the N57S
- adding the newest VANOS availiable
- intelligent software

... plus some minor parts ... I think that would be all and I donīt define this as "heavily modified", its only an AG N55 with some better (newer) parts. If the M-GmbH would modify the N55 more heavily the cost would rise sharply and thats against all whats the BMW AG sought to achieve the BMW AG with its engine decision.

Is it just me or did it sound like it is broken at the end?
Yea I heard this as well...like something broke and was rattling or scraping. Also, the S65 still sounds light years ahead of this car.

Agreed. This is the downside to letting some of the R&D slip to the public so early. All "what if's" and "could have's" right now.

Yes, but

It will be a great car for sure and better than the C AMG, but that inline 6 is the only reason why I picked up mine off the lot this year.
I also hope that exhaust sounds much better than it does in that video...
The first and the last M3 with a V8 is gone...

i just want to drive it...as much as i love hearing the n/a v10 and v8's, the experience of driving is what puts me in a good mood, no matter what it sounds like.

I really hope this is not the final exhaust note ...... It sounds like my flatulent grandfather after a hearty bowl of chilli. Lets hope they slapped on straight pipes for these test runs and the retail version will have more of a low end growl rather than these baffs and lets hope the top end of the engine is smooth yet grunty without being obnoxious unless you really mash the pedal and give her the beans, THEN lets hear that engine go buck wild. Perhaps placing it in M mode should control the actual exhaust note via a valve of sorts and not turn on super secret sounds in the cabin ... Yeah I know I want the world blah blah blah

It's starting to get real for me. I'm excited because the F80 is probably going to be an upgrade to the E90 in the same way the new M5 compares to the E60. The F80 will be a beast.

I have a 2010 e90 335 with the Dinan S2 and BMW Performance Exhaust. So, I'm good with the I6 turbo. It looks like the F80 M3 is going to be even better!

That turbo sounded pretty loud. Did I see a mini gp there at the end of the video?

signed up to get info because I wanted to buy an E92. But seeing how planted the F80 is in the videos is making me question my original intention.

i just hope there is no exhaust note piped in from the speakers.

There's an option to disable it in the M5, I see no reason why BMW wouldn't offer that option for the M3 too if they do even decide to do that.

I am sure that it will be a fantastic performance car. But I also think the exhaust note lacks soul. It would have been good if they kept the V8 like Benz:

Just amazing sound...

Really? I have heard there is no such option, but I could be mistaken.

No, there is no option to disable 'active sound' in the M5.

The only time when anyone has heard the M5 without it is when one of our M5POST members pulled the audio fuse in his F10 M5 to test how much difference the active sound technology makes.

Here is his writeup and video: http://f10.m5post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=680384

idk but i might be mistaking here so dont go crazy on me, but the new f80 M3 seems like the front and rear fender flares do not stick/poke out wider like they used to on the old M3s. Maybe its the camo and i cant tell but the body looks like a regular f30 with the same size fenders and rear quarter panel???? Thats just my observation. i could b wrong. Thanx 4 the help family!!!

Take a look at all the spy photos of the F80 M3. The fenders flare dramatically.
