"Driver Restraint System" error light after steering wheel install

So I think I triggered this "Driver Restraint System" error during my installation of new aftermarket Steering Wheel today. Yes, i disconnected from battery.... but dumb ass me reconnected back the battery while the wheel is off to lower the windows after the wheel and airbags were off... cuz heat wave. I must've triggered it at this point but. Steering wheel and Air bag is now Installed... but error code is still popping up.

Does anyone know if this will reset itself? How do i reset this? Im not sure if dealer will flag me if i take it in. Please help.

Update: Talked to dealer... it was suggested I get it fault reset somewhere else cuz its not covered under warranty... and it will not be cheap. I re-disconnected my battery overnight to see if that resets it. But just in case, Alex (alpine) will be taking care of it tomorrow. Crossing fingers he can sort it out if that doesn't work.

If you are touching anything airbags make sure you disconnect the battery wait 5 min and then disconnect/connect airbags. Sometime if the contact is not good you may got lucky and code will disappear itself but not always.

You can try resetting the CEL using ISTA standalone or E-Sys software (check the coding sub forum) with a $20 cable. If ISTA can't reset the fault then you may have to code the new steering wheel using E-Sys.

Hey I recently took my seat out to do some cleaning and when plugged back in got this warning light. Contacted dealer and they wanted $100 just to clear a code. Was wondering if any of you guys knew if there are any programs or devices I could use to do this on my own (ESYS is no longer a thing) and I was also wondering if Carly could reset airbag warning lights

Hey i got that same Error before but it was for the passenger Restraint. I fixed it by pulling on the seat belt until it was all the way out and slowly letting it recoil back in. it took about 3 tries but it cleared it for me. let me know if it works for you.

I have a new steering wheel coming in on Monday and I have been debating doing the install myself. This settles it, i will let the dealer do it on Wed during 1200 mile service.

if you leave the battery unplugged the whole time and do not plug in the battery or start the car until the steering wheel and airbag are installed you will not have this error.

Yep... just make sure your battery is unplugged. This happened to me because I didnt disconnect the battery correctly. Ive swapped my steering wheels a few times correctly now... and havent had this issue come back. Regardless getting it reset is easy if you find a coder.

Doesn't work cause the driver seatbelt doesn't lock up for some reason

I wish I would have seen this or looked it up prior to installing my steering wheel cover. I had pulled the battery and completed installation no problems. I ended up having a loose paddle shifter so just thought I could take it off and be fine. Nope - always pull battery power first.

Cost me 50.00 to get it done by a local shop... I was also flabbergasted that BMW wanted the car for the day b/c of the error. =\

I got the same error when i installed my steering wheel. It's going in for a service soon (I have a service pack) and I'm hoping the dealer removes it while they service it (because they usually update software).

Exactly.

I recommend wrapping a big towel around the battery cable to prevent an accidental contact with the terminal or anything else while it's off. You can also tie another one through the trunk latch to make sure the trunk lid doesn't latch if you accidentally shut it.

Just a side note, the dealer generally won't flag you for installing cosmetic modifications. If you break something they obviously will make you pay to fix it, but they won't void the powertrain warranty for installing an aftermarket shift lever. The dealers I have gone to also don't seem to care at all about coding. Tuning is another story though...

No offense, but I'm not taking any advice on drivers' restraint systems from a guy named RustySeatbelt.

It's a "Those who can, do. Those who can't, teach" kind of scenario.

The car retains memory despite the battery being disconnected, so u need to wait ~10mins after battery disconnection before working on airbag removal.
