I have driven the new M5. It is definitely a faster car on the street because of immense torque and AWD. The engine noise is pretty muted even with windows down and exhaust set to sport. The dynamic suspension has a much wider adjust-ability range compared to my M3. Comfort is really comfy, while Sports+ makes the car bounce around on crappy roads. The MDM mode is also a bit more "loose" compared to the MDM mode in the M3. The M5 is definitely more comfort and tech oriented than the M3.
This video might be helpful. Both cars are stock, and the M3 has a 6MT. |

If I got a F90 I'd invest in a wide kit. I wouldn't buy M cars to be subtle.

had a f10 before and now going in a fully optioned new 530i I was pleasantly surprised that it felt much smaller from the drivers seat than the dimensions would have you believe. Steering is a absolute disgrace but who cares its a luxury car.

I believe the new M5 is featured in the new Mission Impossible movie (along with a bunch of other BMWs).
They certainly do a good job with all the different lighting/camera angles of making it look more sleek and aggressive than it does in real life...IMO.

Dont make the same mistake I did! I had a similar experience some years back. My E90 M3 was in for service and I had an F10 528i loaner. It was so much more comfortable, luxurious, and easy to drive than my M I thought hey I can get used to this. Eventually I traded in my M for a 528i and it wasnt until a few months in I realized it was a big mistake. The 5er was still comfortable, luxurious, and easy to drive but the giant performance gap and boring nature got old quickly.

I'll probably never own one now that their is no manual and would never be new, the depreciation hit would be too much. I think if I wanted a tank, I'd have to try a X6 M. lol |

I just made the move from an F82 to the F90. I loved my M4, I had no complaints except traction and the exhaust note wasn’t that great. But I think the F8X are some of the best looking cars on the road. I do miss it a little.
I thought about leasing an M3, but I didn’t want to get into another 3 years with the new ones around the corner. So... the F90... it’s a rocket. It’s so fast off the line or overtaking people on the freeway it’s almost ridiculous. Not much on the road can match it. It’s deceptively fast because it’s stable and not that loud. I’ve gone over 100mph on the freeway multiple times by mistake. I do miss the size and weight of the M4, it was a little strange moving to a bigger car, with a higher seating position. But with everything in sport+ the car really does shrink around you. On most tracks the F8X would be better and more fun... but on canyon back roads I actually feel more confident in the F90. It grips, the suspension never gets upset, and I haven’t seen the traction light flash yet. I do miss the sharp turn-in of the M4 though. Also it was fun feathering the throttle in the M4 and bringing it to the edge of traction, and learning that limit. I got good at it. The DCT is better than the ZF for sporty driving. It’s slightly faster and snappier. But the ZF is better in everyday driving and really not that much slower when you’re on it. I miss the DCT a little, but I understand why BMW made the switch. It’s a smoother transmission for most of your driving... and just a notch below the DCT in sporty driving. Fair trade in my opinion. Obviously the F90 is a step up in luxury and features, it’s a beautiful cabin, great seats, leather everywhere. Digital dash is awesome. LEDs in the cabin are cool. Zero rattles. Amazing tech with the 3D parking camera and etc. I prefer the looks of the M4 but the F90 is no slouch. It looks better in person than in photos, has a lot of presence in person. I was surprised when I saw it at the dealership. Still less aggressive than the F8X though. I think the F90 needs an exhaust to get it louder, and some lowering springs to drop it a little in the front. The dealer had put a bunch of m performance parts on it so it came looking more aggressive than normal. Those things help the look more on the F90 than the M3/M4. Like someone said earlier, the M4 is a more raw experience, louder, rougher and a little sharper. F90 is an animal when you turn everything up to sport+ but in comfort mode it’s a luxury car, it’s more dual personality than the F8X... and doesn't have the manic side the M4 has, for better or worse. I’m enjoying the M5, no regrets, both great cars and I’m lucky to be able to experience both! |

That makes sense for a second car. It’s that much more in Australia to jump up to the 6? Damn, we are very lucky in the US with our pricing.

I just saw this review of the m5 and I kind of agree with what they are saying. driving the car simply lacks much driver involvement. it has become an appliance. That's a bit how I feel about the x5m too. The m3 is much more rewarding drive to me. You may agree and like this review of the m5, his ideal car is your old gt350.

I did hot laps around VIR with a pro behind the wheel. Even with 4 people on board, this car can move. I was very impressed. It's no longer a wolf, it's more of a monster in sheep's clothing.
From what I've read on Car & driver and plenty of other publications, F90 is a lot more fun to drive compared to the old one. And that's just the first year F90. There is a competition pack, then LCI and whatnot special editions are coming. |
