M Performance Exhaust Issue
Hi all - I have a '16 F83 with a M Performance exhaust. I recently noticed a very loud rattling noise emanating from the exhaust anytime the engine was revving at approximately 1,100 to 1,200 RPM (which includes all start ups). The car was due for an oil change, so I took it to my local BMW dealership here in the D.C. area yesterday and asked them to take a look.
Turns out, at some point, the muffler was apparently dragged on the ground causing damage to the muffler. Images attached. In short, the dealership told me the system is beyond repair and needs to be replaced at a cool $4,700 ($4,200 parts, $500 labor). Does this sound correct? Does the entire system need replacing, and if so, does the price seem remotely accurate? I'm inclined to have them do the work, as I don't have a technical background and a fairly busy schedule, but if their diagnosis sounds entirely off base, I would like to know and perhaps get alternatively suggestions. Thanks! |

Look for an MPE muffler for sale in the classifieds. They pop up fairly regularly. And they're not worth that much without the mid section since it's a bespoke piece that doesn't really fit with any other exhaust, so you might come out much cheaper going that route.

Eff that dude. Just get an AWE switchpath for ~2100-2500 and call it a day. It sounds better and is lighter and retains the stock valves and you get an x-pipe

If you decide to stay OEM they just need to replace the rear can only. Your main pip , mid pipe & tips will swap over. Now availability might be a different situation. Don't let them sell you a full system..... if they replaced under warranty they would only do the can. You could have a fab guy cut the top open and weld the baffle wall back into place then weld the top closed again

search the forums, common issue. bmw warrantied the mufflers but yours is about 6 years old.
The problem with the muffler only FS ads is these are likely cracked as well hence why they are for sale. Like previous poster said only the can needs replacing so get a quote on that. No tips either (these are 1k alone for CF)

This was not the common issue. Seen it before but it is not super common. Te sides cracking was the redundant failure and it was corrected with the updated brace on the v2...or if you braced your V1
