Software Programming required after diffuser/exhaust instal?

I was talking to my service advisor on potentially letting them instal a couple of mods for me, including an aftermarket diffuser and exhaust system.

One thing that seemed strange was "labor hours" for "vehicle programming". I asked what this was, and was told that BMW repair instructions state that software updates are required after installing diffuser and exhaust. He wasn't sure either as to why it would be required.

Anyone know more about this? Thanks

They do actually need to deactivate the kick open feature on your trunk when installing a diffuser. My dealership forgot to do this and my trunk kept opening up spontaneously when I was standing behind the car with my fob in my pocket after I had my diffuser installed. I'm sure they are still trying to screw you but there is legitimate software changes that have to be made with the diffuser instillation.

Wait? You need to do this if you install a diffuser?

kevin @ eas should I be worried?

The diffuser is carbon fiber and block the signal. That's also why we don't have the antenna "shark fin" made of CF.

There are a couple of diffusers that work with the kick open feature. Dont recall which ones of the top of my head. I'm sure someone will chime in with the answer

Yah, I'm completely aware that diffusers won't work with the kick open feature (I'm not lazy enough to use it). Was referring to the programming part.

Since the carbon fiber diffusers block the signal on the kick feature we havent coded them out. Sounds like the dealership is doing an unneeded step.

Its unneeded until its needed. I imagine most people don't have it coded out and are fine. I was unlucky enough where the diffuser kept tripping the sensor so it had to be coded out.

Just an FYI, this is from page 1 of the repair instructions for installing a F80 rear diffuser.
