Upcoming 3G Cellular Discontinuation - ConnectedDrive Services

I got this email this morning from BMW of North America:
"There are important ConnectedDrive service changes affecting your 2016 M4, Vehicle Identification Number ending in XXXX.

As a result of the sunset of 3G service by wireless carrier partners, by February 2022 your vehicle will no longer be able to receive some or all ConnectedDrive/BMW Assist services, such as BMW Assist eCall, Advanced Real‑Time Traffic Information, Remote Services and BMW Online, depending on your BMW model.

The decision to phase out 3G network technology was made at the discretion of the respective cellular carriers and lies beyond the control of BMW.

Based on your vehicle model, you are eligible for a technology upgrade to maintain functionality of BMW ConnectedDrive services.

For more details, please refer to the 3G Cellular Technology Discontinuation Frequently Asked Questions or contact BMW Customer Relations at 800‑831‑1117.

This happened on my wife's 2011 335is Coupe which had the original ConnectedDrive services for the first four years. We renewed the service in 2015 only to be told that she would lose the service when it expired the following year. Based on her build date, she was not eligible for a technology upgrade, rendering all of her ConnectedDrive services non-functional.

EDITED TO ADD: Apparently this has been discussed in other BMW model forums for several months.

I don't understand. I got the same email but my vehicle has the 4G connection. Weird.

Yeah, after I posted this I did some more research. In iDrive if you go to Menu/ConnectedDrive/BMW Online you will get a screen with a globe in the upper left corner. If it says "4G" in the globe, you have 4G. That's what I have in my 2016 M4. I called the 800 number listed in the email and I'm currently on hold.

UPDATE: I was on hold for a while and finally got connected. The woman I spoke to was really nice but couldn't really answer any of my questions. She offered to transfer me to BMW Assist. I was on hold with them for a long time and then got offered the option for a call back "which could take up to 2 hours". Fortunately, I got a call back within 10-15 minutes. That agent said that she could see that my car "was not 3G" so she wasn't sure why I got that email. She said that others have called that got the same email. My ConnectedDrive services were due to expire on 5/16, so I didn't get the automatic extension until 2/2022 as indicated in the FAQ I referenced above. I also didn't get a reminder email that they were expiring.

That's different. They updated the app and are phasing out the old app. I upgraded my app a few weeks ago.

If you have a 2019 M4 your ConnectedDrive services shouldn't expire until 4 years from your in-service date, or approximately sometime in 2023.

What a mess BMW has created. Just upgrade everyone with a 4G Combox and be over it. We pay yearly for this service and BMW will make up for the loss for the cost of the Combox with it over a couple of years.

I got this email too. Still haven't figured out the best way to see if I am on 3G or 4G. 2016 M4, came with ID4 but updated to NBT ID6.

If I am on 3G, I will be very disappointed in this change. I understand it is most likely out of their control. Assuming this means no more weather, gas prices, traffic, news, etc. They really should offer to update everyone to 4G at this point.

I doubt it. That would probably be part of "Remote Services" in the various ConnectedDrive packages.

Login into connected drive website and go to the store, it'll show you everything in case US has different terms from Canada. There's bunch more options not applicable for us.

This is 2018 ID6, few things are lifetime, few 3 years from purchase date and few are good for 10 years. It looks like we should be able to use remote functions from the app without connected drive professional which is 3 years. I'll update in 20 days when mine expires.

I have CarPlay.. It's okay I guess. No real support for heads up display, no weather, gas prices, remote functionality (lock, unlock, etc). No BMW Assist features...

I called the 800 number listed in the email and the person I spoke to was of no help whatsoever, couldn't even tell me if I had 3G or 4G, and transferred me to BMW Assist. That person told me that their records showed that I "didn't have 3G".

According to the email I'm eligible for the upgrade, but that wasn't verified by either person I spoke to. The FAQ says that current ConnectedDrive subscriptions would be given a free extension to 2/2022 but my subscription, first renewed in May last year, showed that it expired this month. I was able to resubscribe for another year, something that shouldn't happen if my services were going to go away in 2/2022.

Over the weekend I'm going to write an email to the customercare email listed in the FAQ with specific questions about the discrepancies that I've seen.

If your vehicle is a US-spec 2016 Model year and beyond, which has the "Professional" iDrive system (standard on the M4), then it already has a 4G LTE telemetry, rending a hardware upgrade unnecessary.

I have a 2017 F80 and got the letter from BMW and the email. My car qualifies for the upgrade which is free of charge. Not sure where folks have determined 2016 already has 4G when the 2017 LCIs didnt.
