They are both sports cars in the same price bracket that can be DDed so yes they ARE comparable. Have you checked the poll results or read through any of the comments? lots of people are considering the two as viable alternatives, probably not for you but for many others yes
A 718 cannot be daily driven if u aren't a midget or have a family .. Different types of cars

I drove one with and one without. Yes, there are hints of the Subaru, however, once past 3000 RPMs or so there is a nice note that accompanies the rev range to redline that I found great. Not as nice as the new flat 6 turbos which I find to have nailed a nice balance between the old air cooled and the water cooled in their notes, but for a 4 cylinder, certainly wouldn't stop me from buying.

I've heard the m3/4 with MPE (traded a friend for a week with one of my Porsches), AWE and catless DPs with stock exhaust. It's simply not for me. I don't like the very raspy, coarse, unbecoming note. There isn't anything I personally find pleasing about the engine or exhaust note.

That's how I felt when I heard one last weekend (with the sports exhaust). Very much Subaru-sounding at idle, but the tone completely changes once the revs build. It was pretty throaty/deep at higher RPMs, which I wasn't expecting.

It did have the sports exhaust on it. Just revving the car sounded better then the f80/82 but under load I would say from the cabin the f80 sounds better.

Incorrect very easy daily unless you have a family of three or more and they only travel with you. I am 6'-1" and I have way more then enough leg room and still have a couple inches clear height with a helmet on. As far as the short comment goes the back seats in the M4 are geared towards smaller people unless you don't want to sit straight up.

I'll second this. I'm 6.2 and fit perfectly fine in a 981 cayman

Reviews are out:

This guy basically says it's perfect but the sound is so bad he would rather have the old one

This guy says that the sound is sub par but the car is still special enough to go grab one.

The comment sections are FULL of hate lol maybe this will mean heavy discounts?

They must as its very easily a daily car. Suspension is comfortable has way more storage then your average sports car and is easy to get in and out of. Like I said unless you continously have to carry more then one person the caymans/boxster are great daily.

Here's the deal for the current 718 boxster (non S):

$67k MSRP
$800 a month

4K MSRP more than in the deal above but I'm sure the residual is also lower since its new thing on the block. Not too bad but with time rates should get lower. Specially with all the negative publicity the i4 is getting

I daily drove a Z435 for 3 years (no kid but married have a dog), my older brother daily drove his 987.2 for 4 years (1 kid at the time)

I guess if you have to do the daycare run or can only have do it all 1 car then then a 2 seater is out of the question, but it isn't that hard to daily a 2 seater if you really want to

I would get the Cayman as well, M4 is fun and all, but Porsche is another ballgame.

Waiting for this to possibly hit %62+ residual and I guess I'll jump, unless I can get my hands on a new ZCP F80 by March

the m3/m4 is clearly a far better daily. For my needs: occasional home depot runs, grocery, etc. Take my 1 year old around almost daily... a cayman is impossible. I think that would probably extend to 90% of the population. Also, I felt the cayman was so cramped it just wouldnt be comfortable for long commutes.

One is a sport's car.....the other isn't.

The Cayman has more storage space than you think. If you want quiet, a bit more shoulder and seat space then sure the M is the better daily. If you like driving and don't need to haul anymore than one other person, a Cayman can be daily driven...you just have to compromise on a few things. In my 987 CaymanS, I could fit two golf bags in the "hatch" area.

It seems you are definitely going for the PDK.

But just as a tought, I personally would:
- Go for the 718 S
- drop the PDK
- use the PDK $$ and get other options like: PASM and Sports Chrono

A manual 718 S with PASM, Sports Chrono (or PTV), is the complete package for a great sports car.

However, if you really need PDK, that's a different story! Nothing against PDK, it is one of the best transmissions in the world, but just giving another option to think about since: manual + Cayman = perfection!

Also, for the 981 NA 6, the sports exhaust was a nice option to accentuate an already great sound. For the 718 S turbo 4, the sports exhaust may not be as necessary (although I still need to hear it personally). So not having the PSE on the 718 S is perfectly fine IMO.

The base 718 will be a nice car. But if you are truly going to decide between the 718 and 718 S, the engine is THE most important option to consider obviously. You have to really, really keep this in mind, and remind yourself, that at the end of the day, you will eventually forget some of the bells and whistles, but it's the engine which will keep you smiling the most when driving.

There's a way to keep a 2 seater car around if you really want one, regardless of having a kid or anything else.

For example, instead of a new F80/F82 all of us could have gotten a used X5 or some other random family hauler, plus a used cayman

If the budget is lower it could be a civic hatch and a miata, but it is always possible if you want it badly enough

Thank you for the tip, I am dead set on the PDK. but unsure of all other options, I think you make a great point about the engine being the most valuable upgrade. I'm now thinking of getting the Cayman S with Sport Chrono (seems like a must for pdk) and then it'll either be PSE, PASM or PTV for a second Performance option. Good thing I still have lots of time to decide

Great! 718 S with PDK is going to be a fast car. Very curious to see how that feels vs the GT4 I had, which did lack a little grunt down low. And since you are coming from an M4, I am sure you would appreciate as much torque and speed you can get from your new car, so a 718 S w/PDK makes sense.

I'm planning to test drive a 718 S eventually. Ideally with PSE just to see the differences. Although if I were buying a 718 S w/PDK, I would probably lean towards Sports Chrono and Sports PASM (-20mm). I like a little less wheel gap myself. GT4 was -30mm which did get a few scrapes on the front lip, but nothing too crazy. I think it was more due to the extended front lip than the lower ride height anyway.

-20mm on the Cayman is the sweet spot I believe...

Very quick indeed! Here's a link to some instrumented results. Approaching F8x territory:

http://www.planet-9.com/718-chat/150...t-results.html

I built a 718 Cayman S online and my build was $80k..that's including SPASM, PTV but no PSE. That's about the same MSRP as my current F80. I'm very curious to see how the 718 Cayman S drives and if I can live with the flat 4 sound. If not then it's a CPO 991.1 C2(S) for me
