I would buy an Audi or XDrive honestly. It is fun to drive sports cars in the winter that are AWD. If you live in those conditions 7-8 months a year: AWD + 6MT = Awsomeness in the winter.

If M3 is fine on snowy roads, a slight uphill shouldn't be a "nono". I guess that's the contradiction he was talking about.

In my experience, with proper winter tires, you can even climb mountains though. I know I did with my E92 with no problem.

First is that you can drive it in the snow, on winter tires, with little issue. The stability and traction control systems are tuned expertly, adjust their sensitivity to slips and slides based on your speed, and allow plenty of controlled, low-speed wheelspin to get you moving in deep powder. At highway speeds, all controls on, they react with nanosecond-precision to losses of traction which see the traction control light blinking for slips and skids you can’t even feel yet.

The ABS is similarly slick. Even in a simulated emergency stop, diagonally, across alternating stripes of hard-packed snow and cold bare pavement, the M4 not only stayed pointing straight ahead, but barely even squirmed beneath me as it managed constant and unique traction levels under each individual wheel. And, with a trick rear differential that constantly works to optimize traction, getting up and going was rarely an issue. Traction controls can be disabled in stages depending on how much backroads sideways stuff you care for, and your comfort level with avoiding nearby culverts."

Those of you interested in driving the new F8x in the snow should read this article.

I drive my e92 m3 year round in Canada with not much issue at all. Tires are the most important. I personally run Blizzacks . Yes starting off in very deep snow will always be an issue with rear wheel but the new F8x has an active diff which I'm sure is much better than the LSD in the e92.

I really thought I could make it

While I previously always put 4 snows on my BMW's, I was determined to make it through the winter without spending $3000 for snow tires and wheels for new M3. I mean I have access to wife's X3 and I can work from home if necessary.

So 3 days after the NY's "historic" snow storm that fizzled out to a puny 12", the roads were almost clear. Clear that is except for the 300 or so yards from my driveway to clear pavement. I really thought I could make it. Wheels started spinning - I backed off - rear end swung to right - eased up - tried to go backwards to my driveway - almost made it and then slid sideways down the ever so slightly inclined road into the snow bank and got stuck like a pig.

My good friend Julio dug me out and put wood to improve traction but it took almost 2 hours. Embarrassed as neighbors waved as they passed in their "normal" cars. Broke the black blade plastic thing under the front right bumper.

OK time to pile on me for driving in NY winter in my 19" summer tires. I expect lots of laughing smilie faces and ridicule. Ready, set, GO!

Especially because they are upside down......

I always appreciate a lesson learned - just happy you learned it on your own driveway and not on a public road man!

@JerryVH Sorry your day went to shit in a hurry. But as myz said, at least it was a lesson learned in the driveway and not on the road.

We've all been there trying to take the easy way out and as usual it turned in to a major pain the ass.

Back home, every year I wait for the first fresh snow. I shake like a baby while lying to the spouse I handled the winters already. Every year the evening goes like this.

Anna walks to a car. Anna has an invincible I'm a man, see me do this moment.

Every year pure luck saves me from anyone seeing the situation.

To my defence the whole country has three people in it, and at three am there are no one to kill around. I go to an ice hockey arenas parking lot, act like I'm 12, and go home remembering about 364 days to put on winter wheels.

Dude what you did was stupid, but unlike so many even you find it mainly funny. Hell, stuck at your own drive way is pretty idiotic, I hope no one ever tops that with a story that would for example go like:

" I know this one car person who's cars battery was low, and it wad -35C outside when she went to sauna to her parents. She decided to leave the car running so the hubby would get it to start in the morning. Then she remembered she indeed is married and not liking the damn man, shut off the car and because of the moment of nice thoughts, she had put the car on neutral, but as the moment went away she never put it back on gear and while she was enjoying the hot sauna, the car rolled to a snow bank.

It took her three hours to dick it up. She never told the story anywhere since she didn't have to because every friend she has showed up laughing at her".

Yeah, you are the only winter time idiot.

I think it's great to share our stories of stupid shit we do ... it's its own punishment ... so now you're rehabilitated and ready to do more stupid shit. Which will happen. Because, at the end of the day, only a real moron would buy an M-car in the first place. I salute you!

But since you're requesting further admonishment:

why people are not willing to invest a set snow tires on their M rides? i just dontttttttttttttttttttttttttttttt get it (well except for those who has alternative replacement for daily ride or storage mode for winter).

it should be required by law to have winter tires during winter season in Toronto (it is required by law in quebec)... do NOT inconvenience OTHERS just because you THINK it is ok to drive with summer tires...

i saw a hyundai genesis coupe got stuck with its summer tires on a slight uphill road (2 lanes major road in Toronto)... he such a jerky ass who made a SERIOUS traffic jam ... 2 ppl from the car got off and push hard from the back.. why da hell ppl not buying a set of snow tires for winter ????????????

Even some states in the US should have it mandatory. After first using winters 5 years ago I don't think I can ever go back to subpar tires.

The arguments for putting snow tires on a BMW in NY are stronger than the argument against ... but here they are and I'm on the fence (despite getting stuck yesterday):

1. Just spent a bundle and now I have to spend $3K more? Enough already. I will only buy snow tires with new wheels.
2. My wife has X3 which I can use occasionally + I can work from home if absolutely necessary
3. Big hassle of the switch.
4. Where to store summer tires in Winter and winter tires in Summer - they take up a lot of space!
5. Does it really snow THAT much in NY (Long Island) - I mean there are MAYBE 10 days when you can't drive with summer tires vs. 355 days when you can.
6. I just got the car and the 19" rims look so good.
7. It's February already - only 6-7 more weeks to go and I'm clear.
