Curious, my car is a 2018 but production year was 2017. I am also approaching my 3rd maintenance with only about 17,500 miles. Will they change my spark plugs under warranty if I asked them to? Or is something they do at their own discretion?

Why would they change spark plugs under warranty?

Yes they should change the plugs as it is the 3rd oil service. While this would typically be around 30k miles it sounds like you are hitting the annual limit instead of the mileage limit.

I was told by ABR (specialty turner shop), Advantage BMW Midtown (dealership), and BWM of the Woodlands (dealership), all located in Houston, Texas that it would be roughly $800-$900 for spark plugs. No no maintenance plan.
I own 18 comp CPO purchased Feb 21 with 17k miles at 21k today. I haven't been told I need plugs but preparing as I am going in for oil change tomorrow. |

Per the documents earlier in this thread, this is the bolt (BMW-31106854219) I see that gets replaced 2X. Per the diagrams, there are no M12 bolts specified to replace.

That's what blows my mind, a trained tech in a dealership takes 5 hours to change the plugs where some untrained tard like myself can do it in just over an hour after watching one youtube video. The tools needed are super cheap as well, you really only need the special socket.

Changed my plugs yesterday without removing aluminum brace.
2017 Jahre, 6spd, 51,000mi, stock Before changing plugs I ran two cans of the CRC turbo/DI cleaner. Photos show the old versus new plugs and top of position. Was not able to see back side of valves via spark plug hole due to bore scope attachment wouldn’t fit through 12mm hole.

To add another couple of pricing data points:
BMW San Francisco quoted me ~$1900 for replacement of spark plugs. Peter Pan BMW quoted ~$1800. Also, a Q for all you experts - must the spark plugs be replaced at the same time that the engine oil is changed? I'm thinking to do the engine oil change and spark plugs at 2 different shops. |

Those prices are absurd btw, they are pocketing $1500. Plugs are a little over $100 and it takes an hour to 90 minutes to do them.

IMO, it's best to spend the extra ~15 minutes removing additional items in order to get a proper angle of Cylinders 5 and 6. This is crucial for removal and applying the correct torque value when tightening. |

Having a variety of tools helps with the job. Short extensions, decoupling ratchet first or last, etc plus patience.
Use a rubber hose to install spark plugs finger tight to prevent any potential cross threading.

I've had an answer elsewhere on the forum (sorry mate if you're reading this, it's not that I don't trust you) but where my money is involved I need to ask multiple times....
My car is 3.5 years old and is on 20,000 miles. The 3rd oil change is due and the dealer is saying plugs will be changed too. Should I let them change the plugs as my car is over 36 months old, or tell them "no thanks, just do the oil because 20k miles to change the plugs is too soon regardless of the 3rd oil change / 36 month rule and I'll get them done in 10k miles which will be in about 2yrs time for me."??? |
