Are you saying I need this additional adapter? I.e.:

You do!

I feel like I already own way too much stuff, but I’m considering getting a binaural microphone to attach to my helmet. I’m fine with just the normal audio inside the car, but going binaural would add a nice 3D effect, and would be really noticeable when passing other cars.
With the windows open I believe you will always get some wind noise, or certainly I have never seen a video where there is none. Here is a good example of high quality mic in the car, not sure if there is any post processing going on -

I'll throw my setup in for the mix. For my E46 M3, I'm running as follows:

Cheap lav mic > AIM mic adaptor > Smartycam

The mic is a $10 generic mic from Amazon and it's worked perfectly.
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

And the result... amazing CSL noises!

I run the RODE wireless Go setup as well, with a self powered mic to a Hero 8 with the adapter.

Rode Wireless Go

MAONO AU-100 Mic

I tape it to the top of the bumper just under the rear license plate. Like NYG, db is set to lowest or I get clipping. I might try over the plate next time to see if that helps.

Your setup also sounds great. Those damn rode wireless. Atleast they seem to be worth the money.
The DJI osmo does not have a db adjuster. Alot of ppl complain about that on the forum. Really kills my setup.

Lol it's a Kart track they open up for Time Attack and Drift nights. It's become my Friday night routine, so much fun! 4 wheels off incidents are not uncommon.

Drift nights are even crazier going sideways tandem through some of those tight turns. I haven't done it though, not willing to bang up my M3.

I go into all this audio stuff blind and inexperienced so I'm glad we end up using the same settings.

On the R8 vid I clipped it with the mic facing upward - I'm going to try downward later today. I'm assuming it will be better but I always want to see if a lavalier connected to the wireless go makes any differences.

The turbo valve reminds me of an MTA bus for some reason haha. The engine sounds really good though.

So I attempted to place the mic so that it is pointing toward the driver side/parallel with the road. Not crazy about it - there's a lot of midrange piercing through. Might need the deadcat for the Rode Wireless Go. It's picking up a lot more noise than the lav did.

Lost the footage of the M3, but here's my 135i. Depending on the mic and its placement, you could get rid of some of the noise. https://voca.ro/1W8SNrxS34hN

Here's one of an R8 for you.

Will listen to this after work - I'm a little concerned about how much heat is in the engine bay. Looking through the rear view mirror with a wall of heat haze tells me my mic might be unhappy in there.

I had the mic under the bonnet for at least half an hour and didn't have issues, but yeah, it's something to think about.

Same. My track has power hour sessions in the morning and I typically stay out for 45 mins until I need to refill and the mic has lasted... even my $10 cheapo model.

I don't think I'd be worried about my lav mic, I'm not sure if the Rode Wireless Go is as resilient with high temps.

I helped Montaver set his mic up on his GT4 at NJMP last weekend and the difference is incredible.

This is the mic I recommend to everyone, at least initially:

https://www.amazon.com/Purple-Panda-.../dp/B01MSKI46R

Excellent price, comes with every adapter, extension cable and a dead cat.

Above is the best location that I have found and it has been pretty universal so far. I route the wire through the trunk, close it on top of the wire and tape it to the top of the license plate just below the rear camera ledge.

Above is a clip of my Z06 with the purple panda, through a GoPro Hero 9 + external audio mod. GoPro Mic set to STANDARD MIC.

This clip is my R8 with a Rode Wireless Go mic, through a GoPro Hero 9 + external audio mod. GoPro Mic set to STANDARD MIC. Receiver set to minimum input dB. Same location on the rear license plate.

The Rode Wireless Go is a pricier option, I don't notice any real difference in quality but it makes it more convenient if you don't want to run wires through the car... or in my case - I can't route a wire through the engine bay.

https://www.amazon.com/Rode-Wireless..._dp&th=1&psc=1

If you've got tips/vids/audio - please share!
Man, that is a great looking car!!

First of all thank you to the OP for making this thread. I never thought to use my lapel mic to use as external mount on my externally mounted gopro. So sick of that wind noise on my videos.

Are you saying I need this additional adapter? I.e.:
Purple panda > TRS adapter > GoPro USBC adapter > GoPro

EDIT: With searching a bit more, it looks like I do need that additional adapter in between -- d'oh!
Can you clarify please?

I'm about to order a USB C to mic jack because I already have a lapel mic i will use with dead cat to muffle wind noise.

Here is my connection flow

Go pro max - usb c to mic jack adapter - mic jack extension - lapel mic mounted at license plate.

I dont know what a trs adapter is, Will I need that gopro usb c mic adapter and this one Im buying wont wotk with go pro max or hero 8?

Sorry for the newb questions

I believe that adapter is fine to get you plugged into GoPro, but depending on your mic, you may need the additonal TRS adapter. Otherwise, the GoPro will not be able to understand what the mic is sending. If your mic is the same as the Purple Panda, having THREE horizontal black stripes on the plug, you WILL need the TRS adapter interposed between your mic and your usb-c adapter.

Check out the product page for the Purple Panda (linked in NYG's first post), look at the product photos which show different connection scenarios (in particular the 6th photo down) to see what I'm talking about

Are you buying that new 360 Max? If I'm not mistaken, they do not allow external audio.

It took 4 track events to get the right variables... but I think I have what I would call "acceptable audio" on a budget. Left the parts list below for anyone interested in a setup for the Osmo cam.

Lav Mic with TRRS to TRS adapter
