I last had the oil changed at the dealer in the warranty window which is why it had BMW LL-01 FE 0W30 in it (also before I started changing my own oil and discovered this thread to know the difference). Car is not driven much; the 1,827 miles on the oil interval reflects street driving within one year. I did one autocross during that time on a fairly hot day.

Blackstone notes more aluminum in the sample than expected, lower viscosity and a slightly elevated TAN. Is this indicative of an oil pushed past its thermal limit and has sheared somewhat? It seems to me that this is a good example of why not to use FE oil in this car but I'm curious as to what the experts say.

Oil was changed at the time of the sample and replaced with Castrol Edge 0W40 A3/B4 (pre 4/22 formula with A40 certification). The car will continue to see similar annual mileage plus some track duty going forward. Will post updated analysis at the next change.

Also thanks to the big brains on this and other oil threads (@edycol, specifically) - it's been quite the journey to get up to speed on all this!
I don't want to say that is impossible, but something doesn't add up there. I am wondering if the put 0W20 oil?
If that is what it is, if Blackstone ran it properly, stay away from that oil as far as possible!
Go anything LL01 or if it doesn't have LL01, go MB229.5.

I noticed the oil viscosity thins out significantly with the use of Ceratec. That may have to do with the lower viscosity if you ever added such additives.

FCP euro shows Pentosin High Performance 5W-30 as OEM oil (funny, I thought it was Pennzoil that produced BMW branded oil) Has anyone used that oil?? Thoughts?? I currently use it on my X3 but am running Pennz Platinum Euro 5W-40 on the F8X

They can show whatever, but it is not OEM oil.
But Pentosin is very good oil.

I don't know about Walmart but I had ordered some from Amazon at around 30 bucks and it was old formula with A40 approval. It was down to 27 again and I ordered another jug to stockpile and it is still old formula. Get it while you can I guess.

Old batch is API SN. New one is API SP.

I am still thinking that new one has Porsche A40 and that it is mistake on web site.
We will see what bottles say.

My Maserati currently uses Pennzoil Platinum Euro 5W-40, should I use Motul X-Cess Gen 2 or Plat Euro for my M4 CS?

X-Cess Gen 2 is newer formula, not sure Plat Euro has been updated in the past year or so.

Both are very good. Pennzoil has a bit of moly whereas Xcess does not. Get whatever is cheaper.

Which is better if similar in price?

what do you mean by a bit of moly, as in it is like Liqui Moly? I've used Liqui Moly Molygen years ago, and it burned oil so I switched to Motul.

Liquid moly isn't very good oil. Very average.

Go anything LL01 or if it doesn't have LL01, go MB229.5.
I cross checked part number on the service receipt and it comes back as BMW 0W30 LL-01FE, so unless they accidentally gave me something they shouldn't have or Blackstone messed up, my best guess is that the 0W30 sheared down. Never used any additives and never will.

In any event, I have switched to Castrol 0W40 and may switch up again at next change depending on whether or not the formula change impacts the quality of that oil.

Also it almost seems redundant at this point but THANK YOU for your advice on this and other threads and forums!

No additives from my end so I'm stumped!

Just wanted to add that FCP euro actually does carry Motul XCESS 5W40 Gen2

Motul Engine Oil 5W40 - Motul 109776 FCP ID 645136 @ $53.99 for 5 Liters (image is wrong)
Motul Engine Oil 5W40 - Motul 109774 FCP ID 645135 @ $12.99 for 1 Liter

You just have to search the site and not specific to your car. For whatever reason they didn't list the Motul under the F8X oils/kits.
Lifetime change of oils + filters. Use PayPal for checkout so you get return shipping free on them.

Thanks for attending my TedTalk

Thanks edycol for all the knowledge as well. Brain hurts reading this whole thread.

Amsoil and redline only. 040 winter 540 in summer. Dont worry at all about any of the certifications that are designed to steer you towards a certain product.

I can understand your appreciation for boutique brands as they're usually high quality.

As for certifications, they are designed to steer you towards products which meet the standard. Some standards deserve high acclaim (Porsche, or LL-01/04 depending on fuel and region), and some standards just wring out extra economy at the potential expense of wear (LL-01 FE). I wouldn't say not to worry about certifications, but you should pick accordingly.

Absolutely not true!
Explained numerous times. Redline and Amsoil can get approvals too. Actually Amsoil does have certain products approved.
As for summer, ambient temperature and weight does not correlate.

Now running Shell Helix Ultra 5W40 instead of Castrol Edge 0W40. It's got a smoother idle and less lifter tick. I've got a sample of the old Castrol oil waiting to be sent out and will do so again after my next oil change (5-6k Kms).

You can also try Ravenol VST 5W-40 if you have the possibility to buy this in USA. Using it since two years and the engine is running super smoothly with this oil
