Crank hub slipped and upgraded to pinned and keyed solution

Car:
2016 6MT F82 with ~62k miles.
Never had a missed shift, money shift, or over-revved it.

Mods:
Been running the BM3 Stage 2 93oct OTS tune since March 2018 and no other performance mods

When:
Did a spirited pull from 70 to 120ish on the interstate then got a drivetrain malfunction and car went into limp mode. No knock or valves-on-piston sounds so I eased it the 3 miles home and pulled the codes.

Codes:
213601 Power Management, Quiescent current monitoring: quiescent current injury (Low battery from sitting without the battery tender on)

130104 VANOS intake: control error, camshaft clamps

120408 charge pressure control, shutdown: pressure build-locked

130F20 exhaust: angular offset to the crankshaft fl outside tolerance

Solution:
Ordered the SSR Performance Keyed 4 pin crank hub and had it installed at Argos European Car Care here in Jacksonville FL (Can't recommend these guys enough!) Shop was able to get everything installed and the car showed no signs of valve damage. One thing to note, the bolt that came with the kit broke when they were doing the final insanity torque pull that BMW says to do. So if you order the kit just get an OEM bolt as well. I think it was $25.

Cost:
Crank hub $1,200
Labor/parts $~2,600

Final thoughts:
As soon as I saw the "angular offset to the crankshaft fl outside tolerance" I knew it was a slipped crank-hub. Since the car didn't shut off and I didn't hear the pistons eat the valves I figured it didn't spin or slip that far.

Picked the car up yesterday and it's as good as new. Having the keyed crank hub in the car is such a mental relief. I knew I was taking a risk running a tune on the stock hub. I also know there are plenty of cars running modded with a stock hub and are doing fine but they're also risking it. I really enjoy my M4 and plan on keeping it for a number of years longer so it was worth the investment and it has opened me up to E85.

So needless to say I dodged a MAJOR bullet. Hope this info helps and I added some bonus pics of the installed hub.

Glad everything worked out for you in the end. You got very lucky that you only needed to retime the engine and adding the pinned crankhub while they were in there. Now you dont have to worry and you are open to adding more power without the fear of the crankhub.

Thanks for the detailed info on the car and situation. Do you estimate you were on the stage 2 tune for ~30K miles before it slipped?

Figured I'd throw as much info out as I could to help folks make an educated decision on upgrading. I've been tuned almost 40k but haven't really driven the car "that" hard. I've done some pretty hard pulls and embarrassed a few SRT and Mustang boys on the interstate but no drag strips or anything.

From all the research I've done it's super random but if your number comes up it can turn into a really bad day. The shop owner that did mine said he's seen a few fail bad. One spun on the dyno at like 6,500rpm and destroyed the engine.

It's a crazy amount of work to do. Even the shop owner was glad it was over. BMW is good about making simple things difficult haha.

Wow! Thanks for the photos! I think these are the most detailed photos of the actual drilled holes I've seen.

Quick Q. Is it normal to have one side of the holes thinner than the other? maybe SSR Performance can chime in?

Great write up and pictures. Great info for the community to learn from. I got to be honest the crank hub issue is exactly what is stopping me from running a tune. It just seems like a ticking time bomb at that point.

Most likely. It looks pretty centered to me. The ssr crankhub kit comes with an alignment fixture that you bolt on. It has holes where you are suppose to drill.

Got it. To the OP, I also suggest picking up a CBC just in case to make it the most bulletproof fix!

I'm sure the 4 pin method is safe but shit can happen. Reference this thread: https://f80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1754512

Yep, get a CBC on it, just so that big bolt never backs out. That's the "full solution"... and then you're good until you get up into bent rod or slipped clutch(es) power levels (>650-700TQ).

100% The feeling of "what if" was always in the the back of my head. The thing that I have learned the most from years of reading these posts and then it happening to myself is the complete randomness of it. Bone stock cars with 10k spin and eat the engine and then you have guys who have been running E85 and drag racing with no issues. I feel so much more confident now that it's pinned.

Found the Vargas VTT CBC kit yesterday on-sale for $89 and ordered it. And you're totally right. Now I can worry about to breaking normal things like half-shafts.

Yup, exactly what they said. It was just the angle of the photo.

Got a Vargas VTT kit in the mail as we speak.

Yea....my first M4 was a late build 2015 and I beat on it all the time doing pulls running a JB4 on map 7 and E40. Never once thought of a slip...hell never even heard of it back then. Then I left the S55 platform for a couple years and now am back with a early build 2015 and that is all you hear about. I'm like WTF....

Mines an early MY16 and the crank hub stuff was just coming to light when I took delivery in Jan 2016 but no solutions. The changed the friction disks and bed plates helped but folks are still spinning them. If you're going to tune then it's a must have in my book.
