Please help about s55 oil burning problem

Hi guys, I know it is quite normal in cars and causes may vary; however my car is so weird.

My car is F82 M4cs with 32121km total mileage, same engine with other F8x m3/m4(I guess).

Days ago I did a normal maintenance(because the car showed the warning info that oil level reached the min level after i drove 6500km), moto oil change, oil filter change etc... the day after I went to a small racing day and run a kinkana circuit, the next day the car popped up the warning that the oil level reached the min level again(it only ran 410 km since the maintenance 4 days ago).

410km with 1 Litre oil burned? srsly???

I checked the engine and tailpipe, no leak and no oil.

The oil brand i am using is RAVENOL RCS 5W-40 btw

Are you seeing any smoke from the exhaust when driving? Are you sure there are no leaks? Any chance it could be a faulty sensor? I would drain the oil and get a fresh oil change so you can establish a baseline.

Yes, I went to workshop and checked the engine and oil cooler, no leaks at all, and the normal way we check the oil burning problem is to see whether the tailpipes have black mats, but they are very clean. The smoke is white as usual, I know burning oil will cause blue or black smoke? The sensor could be damaged, but how do check if it has problem

Maybe M4cs needs 7.0L oil rather than 6.5L?

It confused me so much, cause 410km burns 1 litre is a very serious problem i assume.

I changed the oil in my F82 and E92 a week ago.

I bought two 5 liter jugs of Castrol 5w40 for the M4 and two 4.4 liter jugs of Castrol 5w30 for the E92. When I was finished, I drove the E92 into town and when I returned I checked the oil and it showed that I was down 1 liter.

The mistake I made, and you made have made as well, was in subtracting 6.5 liters from 10 liters leaving 3.5 liters for the M4 change, and then adding oil to the E92 until I had 3.5 liters remaining when filling from the 8.8 liter jugs. I just forgot the difference in total quantity. It was a simple, stupid error, but one that had me scratching my head for a few moments until I figured it out.

Just double check the amount you actually added, versus what you think you added. Might be as simple as that.

I don't believe that this is an oil burning problem. If you were actually burning oil via a broken oil ring on a piston, then you would not fail to notice a significant cloud of blueish white smoke coming from the exhaust.

Only way to check if the sensor is the problem is to do an oil change.

1. Drain all engine oil.
2. Fill with appropriate quantity of oil - keep note of amount.
3. Drive 1K miles (or until oil light warning comes on)
4. Drain all engine oil and measure to see if significant difference compared to step 2.

I'm picturing the scene from Die Hard III lol.

quick data point. No oil consumption for me. MY18 w ~19k miles. I also under-filled when I did my first oil change and needed to top up. Its my habbit of aiming to be ~1/2 qt low and then top up rather than overfill. I misjudged and was down a full quart. I miss dipsticks.

First you need to establish if you are actually losing oil or if it's the sensor.
Drain the oil and measure how much you actually have left? If 6.5l comes out then it's likely a sensor fault and you should replace it.

If less comes out, then you do have an oil leaking/burning issue. That much oil ought to be showing up somewhere! Turbo seals maybe or a leak that's sloshing about in the undertray?

Just changed the oil on my 2017 with 40,000 mi and oil was down maybe ~150mL after 5,000 miles.

In the F8X the oil sensor is more accurate than in the E9X generation

OP, did you see the car's display showing full oil? You can access this in the idrive
If after seeing it full, 410 km later you get a oil level warning light then you have a problem.

I live in the northeast and I use 0w-40 all year long and there is no oil burning issue in my F83.

During my last oil change on my 2018 M3, I asked the mechanic how they check the oil level to add more if needed. He said they don't, they just drain and refill the oil using a mechanism that automatically fills the engine with the correct amount.

M4CS needs 7L of oil as it shares the same oil pan as the M4GTS (0.5L extra capacity).

M4 CS engine oil capacity is 6.5L per BMW. What is your source?

BTW if youre tuned with BM3, they have this error all the time. Its a known gremlin and I 've had it multiple times. Best way is to either reflash with a battery tender. Another way to verify is to recheck the oil level right after you get the error. If it persists, then yes you are leaking oil. When my oil level sensor broke, I could not even start the measurement process, so I doubt its your oil level sensor.

I think you're confused. If the GTS and CS have the same oil pan, they have the same capacity. Both are 7 L. BMW has it wrong in their own documentation.

It is correct in the M3 CS documentation though.
