Right. The Bimmer Tech coder told me that if I ever flashed the firmware to something newer than version O that the coding he had done would have to be completely redone (which makes sense). But he was clear that simple map updates will not affect the coding (which also makes sense).

You were a huge help, WhiteFox! It's sometimes a challenge to be an early adopter, as we were with this Bimmer Tech display adapter, but I have to say that it is easily the best mod I've done so far. OEM+++.

Indeed think we may have been their first customer in sometime as they took apart their own car which has the same mod to check a few things I had questions on as were not sure themselves. I’m doing the G series mirror with garage opener retrofit in two weeks and will post on this soon.

Their coders seem to really know what they are doing, though.

Well, I'm glad you got it to work properly, although not feeling so well about the fact that I have the same screen as you and the bimmertech adaptor ready to go into my car.

I have NBT EVO_Y which I hope will make a difference and not require remote coding......

It took Bimmer Tech about an hour to code the MGU display to work at the correct resolution. After all that my firmware is still NBT Evo_O. So I don’t think the firmware has anything to do with it.

But I will say that the map resolution is higher now than it probably should be. The map contains much more viewable data, so I get the impression that the map displays its data at 1920x720 while the other display content (menus, etc.) is larger, likely 1440x540.

Makes me think that Bimmer Tech forced the map data to display at the native MGU resolution. I personally think it looks great.

I might be better off just getting an earlier version of the display and selling off the one I have. Was less than $200, less than the adapter from Bimmertech!

Suit yourself, but the MGU display is great if you like higher resolution output. It’s especially useful when using the navigation.

Appreciate your comment. I'll see what happens when I install the CID I have, and then go from there depending on how it works out. If I sell off the one I have and buy one known to work out-of-the-box I'll only be out a few $$ total, which I'm sure will be far less than an hour of Bimmertechs time.

Plus I have a shitty battery and no power access outside (street parking only) to connect a charger. (Which I also don't have!)

Just leave your car running. That's not a problem when coding/flashing the head unit only. kubax86 can confirm. Thanks.

Oh, thanks for the info, I thought it had to be ignition only. That should make a difference. I am waiting for a battery charger to be delivered. May as well have one, won't go to waste.

Which display did you end up buying? The 10.25” display makes a HUGE difference in the F8x because the BimmerTech adapter brings the display closer to the driver (about flush with the top of the trim).

If you are interested in the final version of the MGU 10.25” display, it is part no. 65509826394. Its native resolution is 1920x720 so it will need special coding/flashing for the BMW maps to display properly.

I bought the same part number that you have, so will likely face the same coding requirements. I'm not sure I want to spend the $$ for an hour of Bimmertechs time, so might buy an earlier part, but am interested in the higher resolution also.

So if you buy a scaler unit, that coding isn’t needed?

Is the only difference between mgu and scaler the coding?

Is part number 65508715339 gonna work?

Buy the scaler unit as very little coding and works perfectly fine. If you buy MGU unit there is no higher resolution setting in optional coding hence needs some custom coding to make it work.

This is correct. The MGU display will, once your head unit is programmed to do so, display the BMW map at the 1920x720 higher resolution. More map data is visible at one time because the graphics are smaller, just like using a higher resolution setting on a computer. I think that’s pretty cool.

And it’s apparently not coding that makes it work. It’s more involved than that. kubax86 has an idea of how BimmerTech did it.
