F83 Vert - water in trunk causing amp issues

I searched and couldn't find additional conversation on this.

Starting my M4 vert, I get the warning tones error—no audio from chimes, car play, radio. Now I am getting crackling and pops from speakers even with audio muted and turned down.

I googled and found an issue with water getting into the trunk. I did find some damp carpet and water drips. Obviously, the amp doesn't want water. And unbelievable that BMW has an issue with water leaking into the trunk with electronics present.

I have a message into my dealer, but my warranty has expired. I was told there is a BMW tech bulletin or TSB, but I am SOL given I am out of warranty. Do have an Allstate extended that I will attempt to use. It is almost undrivable due to the audio crackling and popping at a high volume.

Does anyone have info or a link to a discussion or a solution online?

thx
Jim

Thanks. This would have to be from rain. Obviously shouldn’t be leaking.

There’s an issue with the convertibles regarding the water drain channels.
They get clogged and water begins to flow inside the cabin.

YouTube “f33 convertible holding water” or something to that effect

Makes sense. Thanks. I had this issue with a 550 years old where the passenger footwell was wet and found a drain tube I stuck a wire and water rushed out.

Makes sense given the pollen and plant debris lately here. It happened after a rain and then I put down the top that probably dumped water into trunk.

Heres a thread with some links/resources

https://f80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1798064

I’d saved it as its on my list of things to do to my car, though i havent got around to it yet. In the meantime, you could disconnect the amp so you can drive the car. Some photos on how to access it here;

Good luck with the warranty, hopefully they cover it.. i have a similar extendo i bought in case my crank hub spins, but it should cover this if it happens too. Havent had the need to use it yet, thankfully..

Excellent links! Appreciate it. I will try that SIB process myself.

Dealer evaluated and found corroded and shorted amp and controller. Connectors as well. Cleaning area and connectors plus new amp and controller. $2600. After a good will 20% off.

amp is back ordered.

Fixed the water issue. My extended warranty denied coverage due to water as the cause. Regardless of why.

Hmm… that’s not great that they didn’t cover it. I guess that means i need to make sure i check/clean my drains out. Sucks about the cost of that amp too, sheesh. Mine’s a 2015 and was outfitted with the stock amp (HK was an optional extra), and i upgraded to a Bimmer-Tech amp, but I’m not sure how that works with your HK system. Was $1100, and i’m happy with it.

Edit: missed that the amp is backordered. Here’s the bimmer-tech stuff: https://www.bimmer-tech.net/speakers...lifier-for-bmw - might save you $1300 and some waiting, fwiw.

Great point. I’ll check that out and check amp upgrade options. It’s just plug and play. I’m sure they will charge $500 for the Diag etc. But $1100 + $500 is much less. And quick.

Bimmer-tech does recommend disabling ASD via a little adapter they provide, so the dealership may not want to do it since it’s “aftermarket”. Definitely working asking them, of course. I ended up installing mine, and the install itself was easy (the removal of the trim in the trunk was annoying though - here’s a thread on what to expect if you take that route), but it is definitely just p’n’p.

Edit: grammar

Edit2: Hmm.. you may want to verify compatibility w/ bimmertech. From here:
Quote:
As any BMW Harman Kardon sound system review would agree, Top Hi-Fi is a significant improvement over the BMW HiFi speaker system. For anybody looking to upgrade their system at a later date, the fiber optic amplifier connection means most popular aftermarket amplifiers on the market will not be compatible with the system, including ours.

Yes. I’m going to verify part #s and find them on eBay. It’s purely plug and play as you stated.

Ended up shipping amp to Bavlogic and they will fix it. $550. Dealership charged $175 to diagnose and fix leak. So about $750 is much better than $2600. I will not deal with the ASD unit. Have MPE exhaust. Don’t want speaker exhaust noise.

Good deal! I had my 135i CCC and iDrive monitor re-soldered by them, seemed like a really good dude. Glad you got it sorted for a decent price.

Did you end up doing that drain hole fix in the SIB doc? I keep my car under a cover (but outside) most of the time, but it’s still on my list, as i did check and there was no hole there to facilitate drainage, at least. I also assume, since I live under lots of pine trees, that the drains themselves could use a cleaning.

Heres a vid from an E93, and iirc ours are similar, 14mm hex head to remove the drain itself, if you plan to clean it out.

The dealer said they cleared it out and aware of the SIB. Unclear what exactly was done. Currently I’m parked under pines also at times. Unsure if that is the cause.

Yeah, hard to say, i know my other vehicles end up with pine needles down inside the windows all the time, so i guess it would make sense as a possible culprit. Maybe the sort of thing you have the dealership clean out annually or something, assuming it doesn’t cost much. I may actually do that myself.

How was the result? Repairs go smooth? And how long did it take them to do the work and shit it back?

It works perfect and he fixed it in a day. The shipping back and forth was the longest part. Highly recommended.
