I have a pretty severe rattle in the armrest compartment only under hard acceleration. I thought it was my BMW pen, but then I emptied the compartment, still there. Pulled out the phone cradle dummy piece, still there.

Cars going in today for break in service. Hoping they can figure it out. Pretty annoying.

Anyone else with this?

D

Update - Its now Wed and the car has been at the dealer for 3 days. They are not sure if they will have it fixed tomorrow, or if it will take a week, or two or three, to get the solution. I dont even know what to do.

They think they figured out what it is, but I am being told there is no known solution and they have to keep my car till they get an answer from BMW on what to do.

They are saying that the E-brake lines are hitting the CF driveshaft under the car when I accelerate. They are not sure if I need a new driveshaft, or if they need to unbolt everything under the car and then reassemble seeing if that gave the parts some space. (They already have the exhaust down, and all the heat shields off the bottom of the car.

Update 2: they found a way to adjust the brake line guides so that it is further away from the driveshaft and say that it does not happen anymore. I will be picking it up in the morning.

A bolt might be loose to cause that noise.

I have one under the car. It's a metallic rattle, almost sounds like the exhaust.

Sounds like you may have the same issue. Does it kinda sound like its coming from the armrest compartment?

Did it work?
I think I may have the same rattle under hard acceleration. The rattle sounds like it underneath the car, right in the middle (so I guess the armrest area)

I thought it was the exhaust as well. Did you get it looked at?

There is a service bulletin for this. The parking brake cables rub against the drive shaft during hard acceleration. The techs are instructed to bend the tubes that carry the cables slightly up which provides enough clearance for the drive shaft.

Awesome! I wasn't sure if they had addressed it internally yet. Thanks!

Thanks for posting, I guess that is two things I need to have the dealer look at.

Driveshaft knocks almost always manifest as a sound coming from the center armrest in every car I've known...

I just sold a vehicle that the driveshaft was improperly installed in (a brand new one, installed at a dealership), and when the car unleashed all 600 lb/ft of torque the driveshaft itself would slap the tunnel. Felt like someone was hititng the underside of the armrest with a sledgehammer

I had the exact same problem. Really only did it at full throttle in second gear. My car was in the shop for 30 days because of it! They replaced diff bushings and that didn't fix it. I told them when I dropped it off that I thought it was the driveshaft rubbing in the back. Mine started doing it the second day I had it in Europe.

They put a GoPro under my car and drove it around. The driveshaft is moving around too much. It literally is bouncing around under there when you get into power. They sent the footage to BMW for review.

Not very happy with the short term solution. Just moving what the driveshaft is hitting out of the way doesn't solve the fact that the DS is moving entirely too much.

Oh, and Phil Harlow...you've got the problem too. Exactly what mine sounded like.

I've got it too ... Sounds like an industrial zipper being unzipped. Love this car but it makes crazy sounds.

I wish my noises were as simple as the service bulletin states. We looked at the drive shaft and e-brake cable but there was no visible contact between the two. The noises happen between 2nd and 3rd gear and 20-40 MPH.
However, now that's its pretty cold in the North East, I have not heard the noise. Weird.
