Girodisc vs OEM rotors?
Are they worth it for street driving only? Girodiscs are like twice the price and even being able to replace the rings is still more than the cost of new OEM rotors.

Braking performance on track noticeably improved with just track pads and fluid. I then got Girodiscs because my rotors were a bit toast and wanted to improve things further. If your BMW rotors are okay, purchase new and more aggressive track pads & fluid and re-assess the situation afterwards. Don't forget that the ducting for brake cooling is not the best either to say the least.

I wouldn't do this for 'street driving'. The OEM system is more than up to the task for that.
Giros are a good upgrade for tracked M3s |

There's a lot about it in this thread https://f80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1798125
I'm sure there are more qualified people than me to weigh in here but the cliffnotes are: 1. Flows more air through the center vanes than stock, leading to cooler brake system temps. GiroDisc also designs curved center vanes that act to pump air through the vanes during rotor rotation. swagon already mentioned that F8X cars lack brake ducts so any kind of ventilation that flows air from the center of the rotor hat outward evenly through the vanes is a plus and will help lower brake system temps. 2. 2 piece design means that the outer rotor ring can expand and contract independently of the center hat. The free floating nature of the GiroDisc (and similar) designs means that the expansion and contraction can take place without stressing the center hat, which will make cracking/warping less likely. 3. Slotted rather than drilled design means less likely that cracks form between drilled holes. Drillholes also tend to collect brake pad material and become clogged (which contributes to pad deposits on the rotor surface and has cooling disadvantages). 4. They may also be lighter than stock but not sure; main benefits for tracked cars in my view are in thermal management. |
