George from Gates was a real pleasure to deal with, fast responses to questions and I'm overall very satisfied with everything. This is what our cars should of really came with, and I'm happy George now made that happen.

When I looked inside the old key, I can tell it was de-soldered precisely and no overburn marks in sight.

Cheers!
He's the real deal!! Glad you're happy with your key!

I just a low battery warning on my Gates modified key. I would have normally just went to the dealer but I doubt they will pass a modified one in under warranty. Not sure if his process transferred over the existing battery or not.

Whats the best way to change it?

It's super easy. Buy a name brand CR2032 like Energizer or Duracell and pop out the key blade with the button on the side. Then the back panel comes off with a thumb push on the right corner in the pic

George is working on the digital key that the i8 uses. Looks promising. I've been using my modded key for almost a year. Changed the battery once.

George said he noticed late last year that peoples batteries were dying quickly so hes now putting in new batteries.

That's good service. I mean, how would he know this was an issue right? Not really his fault but good on him for being proactive.

I could tell it was just a cheap Chinese battery, probably a few years old, that was included by the manufacture to cut costs. Not a big deal with how cheap they are to replace with a fresh branded one for peace of mind.

It's in the works. I think you can get a full 4 days of use. Before needing to charge.

Not sure I would want to have to charge my key every 4 days!

You'd have to charge it eventually. It's a bigger key with a display. I like the key.

So I changed the battery but still get the low battery message.

I tried placing the key near the ignition, didnt change anything.

When I press unlock though the message goes away until I turn the car off. At that point it immediately pops up on the dash again....

Just curious, did you change it with a branded battery like a fresh Energizer? I made the mistake of buying some generic ones off of Amazon one time and they were pretty much expired before I used them.

I bought a duracell 2 pack on amazon. maybe this is an old batch as well? Might be pointless to try the other battery if they are the same age..

Its odd that when I press unlock, it makes the message go away as if now it realizes the battery is ok. But then shutting it off brings it back.

It might be worth a shot to just grab something from the store fresh off the shelf. I had better luck going that route.

I agree but as long as it has wireless charging it wont be so bad. you can just have a mat at home, or install one in the car and leave it there whenever you drive and you'll never know the difference.

Did you ever get this issue resolved? Was it the battery or the key itself?

No I haven’t even driven my car since so not on top of my list right now. But I will try with a different battery soon enough.

Finally got this resolved.

Today I discovered a spare key in the glove box. Might have been there since delivery. That is one that had a low battery which is why when pressing unlock on my x5 fob, the message would go away as that key was fine. But on every start up it would use that spare key and not the one in my pocket.

Just to make sure I'm ordering the right option, the 4 button option is the correct one for the F80, correct?
