Easy upgrade - Mishimoto oil cooler DIY

Hope everyone is having a great week! My latest video is up! I wanted to share it out as hopefully driving, events, and track season is coming!

Oil temperature really matters and helping your motor to cool faster is a big deal! The Mishimoto Automotive oil cooler upgrade for the S55 motor can make a huge difference!

If you tune your car or run in a hotter environment (or both!), keeping oil temps down is critical.

Check out this easy DIY change from Kies Motorsports and see how you can easily do this too!

What did you see as a reduction in oil temps?

Not enough driving yet honestly.. I have older BM3 logs I could use as a baseline when I get a chance.

I spent a weekend several months ago DIY'ing the full Mishimoto cooling package (heat exchanger, TMIC, oil cooler). The setup has been great so far.
But, as far as impact on IATs and oil temp, I haven't noticed a hugely significant reduction.

The IATs tend to run 18*F over ambient now while cruising (would average around 20-25*F over ambient with OEM - although there was a leak from the TMIC, so low fluid levels could have been a factor in that).

Oil temps tend to hold right around the OEM setup values for Efficient/Sport and Sport+ modes.

Now, what I have definitely noticed is better consistency in these temps and quicker return to baseline temps when banging on the car.

You are spot on. I upgraded just my front mount heat exchanger and the best I got was 13 degrees above ambient at highway speeds using the OEM intercooler.

One thing that I've noticed is that thicker oils will retain heat and it will be harder to dissipate even with upgraded oil coolers. This is just simple physics, but I've proven that with data logs. It will take quite a while for my oil temperatures to drop from efficient mode to sport plus mode. I am currently running Motul 300V 5W-40, which is a bit on the heavier side of 40 weight oils.

I am likely going to drop back down to Quaker State Ultra Euro 5w-40 since it is a thinner 40 weight. I noticed my oil temps are lower overall and drops much quicker with running a lighter oil.

Also, oil analysis proves that the Quaker State oil is essentially the same as Pennzoil Euro 5w-40 except it has a stronger base oil to withstand longer drain intervals (50f increase in flashpoint). It is also $18/5 quart jug at Walmart hehe.

Looking at the cooler shape it looks like those that upgraded to the Turner/Fall line skid plates might have fit issues. With the different shape it looks like the skid plate might no longer fit with the upgraded oil cooler. Hopefully someone can confirm

Same here. I don't have a pic ATM, but can confirm fitment with combo of Mishi oil cooler, Turner skid plate, and CS front spoiler.

Minor modification was necessary on the skid plate to accommodate the spoiler, but nothing that took more than a Dremel and some patience.

Absolutely fits.. there is a rubber gasket thingy on the back edge of the Turner plate you will need to take off.

Ahh, yes. I recall that step now. Although, I used a razor blade and trimmed the rubber down to maintain the seal against the cooler edge.
