I'm all in favour of trying new things if the old ways arent working BUT here i think the issue with NK is that trump isnt really trying anything new, other than giving NK the face to face. What he has actually discussed and agreed with KJU amounts to less than NK has given the in past (the commitments made in Monday's "agreement" are more vague than previous commitments NK made, eg: in the 6 party talks from 10 years ago). In the words of Jerry Seinfeld, Trump has (like Costanza) held out for....less.


Mostly, I don't think trump cares at all. He has already claimed victory. All he wanted was the photo op so he could campaign as a guy who did something, counting on his state media (aka fox news) and a somewhat ignorant/unquestioning base to accept without question his (False) statement that he really did accomplish something.

Trump doesnt need this to go any further than it has (a meaningless statement) as he really doesnt care about a deal, all he cares about is a general veneer/appearance of a deal. That gives him the points he needs with his base, which is as deep as trump cares about any issue. For him, this is a game. Unfortunately, the rest of us have to live in this world....


As for the other countries, yup. Trump's continued ignorance/willingness to tear up the global alliance that has created conditions for peace and prosperity for 70 years to have photo ops with KJU, Xi and Putin is.....troubling. Again, I have a suspicion most of his base does not know or thinks they dont care (though they should) at how much damage he is doing to american interests.

As I said to a colleague in texas yesterday, at this point, what US ally trusts trump's word? The Europeans? Unlikely after Trump took the serious political capital they had invested in the Iran deal and tore it up based on a flimsy pretext, leaving them with nothing. The Canadians? After we shed blood with you in Afghanistan following 9/11, Trump now calls our steel a 'national security threat'. He promises he won't impose tariffs, then does.

So allies out, then.

What non-allies? If you were a budding dictator, why would you accept any deal from Trump? Or any american leader? Even assuming trump were replaced by a Pence or a Romney or take-your-pick-of-GOP president, why would any foreign leader assume a deal struck by anyone would not just be unwound by another trump in 5 years? Theoretically, congress should hold back that sort of president yet they are not doing that.

With relatively weak international legal enforcement mechanisms, much of international relations relies on countries keeping their word. If you trust the country, you can get things done. Trump is pushing (and may have already pushed) the USA into the 'untrustworthy' category. That will take a long, long time to repair.

The ONLY countries that gain from this fracturing of the western alliance from within are Russia and China, who are now much stronger by comparison to a splintered block than they are against all of us together. That isnt a good thing.

I broke my phone (or actually the replacement phone i have because I broke my real phone) yesterday when this old man stopped me to ask where he could find a shop that would email him pics of him. He had list his wife four years ago and his son had set up a profile for him to a dating site.

I put my stupid dog in a leash and made her sit with the man so he could show a more approachable side of himself and when he asked her name and I answered, after I told him how I ended up naming that stupid dog Kissa (cat in Finnish) the first thing he asked me after that was "what's wrong with America these days?" "why are they putting kids through that?"

So ... I guess there isn't a soul on this planet who hasn't heard of this by now. That's what we think of now when we think of USA.

After that comment from my mom about my tendency to kill people or pets, the kids have been glued to my side. The dog is getting better and we are waiting for more results from the tests taken from the vet still.

We're having a movie night since the hubby is helping in a move, and we cant go to the cottage since our dog cant be let loose.

So as all normal parents I negotiated a Terminator 2 (fine. They wanted to watch alien but I can't watch those so they compromised!).

When I was a kid, we had this catching game called who's afraid of the black man (the catcher was marked with a black stripe or something but a horrible name anyway). Yeah, I know but I'm old!

They changed the name, since we used to play it in sports classes to who's afraid of the octopus which translates to a ink fish when doing it strictly.

Yeah well, I just took the kids to the beach and kids are playing the same game, where one stands in the middle while others try to run or skate or swim past her or him but now the game is called who's afraid of the American.

Yeah. This is so fucked up parents even this far away have to explain their actions to kids.
