Stuck between these two: F82 M4 vs F83 M4

Looking at ordering a new car next few weeks.

Decided on the spec and colour for both interior and exterior.

Looking at Laguna seca blue with Golden Brown interior.

Question i have is: Which one would you choose between a F82 M4 Coupe vs F83 M4 convertible.

Take note that i have a E46 M3 in Laguna Seca Blue with extended Cinnamon interior. Can see why i have gone for the spec above.

From what i know not seen one in Uk, how about one in the rest of the world. I mean the Convertible.

I chose the F83, because blasting around in a fast vert is more important to me - and enjoyable far more often - than a couple of seconds on the track.

Tough choice honestly, I came from a host of convertibles before I wound up purchasing my hardtop M4 (see my "drives" lol). What did it for me in the end was the carbon roof as it just looks so great, and I'm a fairly tall person so my head has always stuck up over the roll hoops a bit in convertibles. So looks/safety were the considerations for me. After having the car for a couple years now, I honestly don't miss the vert much. Yes I'd still like to have it some days, but overall it's fine. The interior also stays MUCH cleaner with a hardtop, verts need constant interior cleaning if you drive with the top down often.

Can't go wrong either way, and LSB is a fantastic color choice!

I personally don’t like the convertible because of how ugly it looks in rear when up. But down it’s one of the best looking cars there is. If bmw ever fixes the look of the convertible I will buy one.

Came from an E93. You’ll definitely feel the extra 400 lbs over your head and in the rear.

I say get the F82 and use the savings and get a Miata lol

You first need to decide whether or not you want a convertible. Compare the F82 to other coupes if you want a coupe and the F83 to other convertibles if you want a convertible. I have had both and don’t think they are really good cross shopping comparisons.

If you plan on tracking the car or want to extract every ounce of performance out of the car, then F82. If you don’t plan on tracking it and can tolerate the extra lbs, then the F83 is more comfortable and, of course, it’s awesome to go topless in nice weather.

By going soft top next generation I'm not sure they're gonna fix it either

F82 for sure. Carbon roof is totally worth it for the looks.

If i ever did get a convertible i'd get a car that was designed to have a folding top from the start: s2000, miata, mercedes SL, Boxster.

FWIW, the weight penalty of the convertible (vs stock coupe) can be easily overcome with a BM3 tune. I drove my F83 for about a month before adding the tune and it's night and day...faster than my previous F80 by a lot.

I would pick F82, because it has a much better bodyline and has the carbon roof. With that said, it will look more proper alongside your E46.

I’m not a convertible guy in general due to weight and structural integrity, but the seats on the F83 just ruin it in my view. I can’t believe they couldn’t have done a better job there.

I vote F82 by a mile.

I actually got chance to drive a convertible M4 for about 3 weeks, I've got a coupe normally.

Now admittedly, it was a newer production car than mine, so there were some other differences anyway. I'm also more of a Friday commute B-Road warrior than a track guy, take that as you will.

Anyway things I would note when comparing:

1. Vert is noticeably heavier back to back, meaning its more comfy but also sways on bends more and doesn't have the same kick back on acceleration. I mean it will still cream most other cars, and it feels fast. But when I got back in mine you feel it. You can really tell the roof is missing when it's down and you are trying to press on.
2. I actually preferred the seats on the vert, didn't hurt my thighs on longer trips as much.
3. The vert doesn't get as many looks as the coupe with the roof up, and it gets more with the roof down, even more during the roof up/down process. If that matters to you of course.
4. I really missed my carbon roof, it makes the coupe look far more "meaner" in my opinion.

I see you are in London, so I'd suggest the convertible if you are going to be cruising around town or on motorways most of the time. If you expect to have time to gun it on A/B roads or the track, the coupe will get your heart racing faster for sure. Both are great.

Seats in F83 are far more comfortable than an F82. Having had both, it’s really no comparison. If you are referring to aesthetics of seat appearance, that is personal preference, or if referring to support for track driving, it is not the right comparison. Anyone who wants to track should get the F80 or F82 rather than the F83.

Yes the F83 is slower then both the F80 and F82 but it is a very fun car and looks great too. I personally like it better then the F82 so if i didn't get a Vert i would've gone for the M3 since the Rear hips give it a really aggressive stance. Here is some pictures of mine

I'm normally not a fan of hard top verts, but there's something about the M4 in the right color that's just "got it".

To me it's all about the seats. If you're able to take a used one for a 30 minute drive to test how it impacts your thighs, that would be the the deciding factor for me. As much as I love my M3, I probably wouldn't have gotten it if I knew the thigh bolsters would hurt so much. I need to take a break and get out if travelling for longer than an hour.

Personal choice, but I can't get over the lines on a convertible. That's not to say I've never seen a convertible I like, just have never seen one that I'd be willing to spend my own money on. I realize it's all personal but since you're soliciting opinions, that's mine.

I've considered the convertible. For me, it comes back to a couple of things:

1) How often would I drop the top? The ideal temps for this are 65-80 degrees. Warmer than that and it's too hot, and cooler than that, you're just trying to justify it and freezing in the process. Is the juice worth the squeeze?

2) More money, heavier car, no as cool looking with the top up.

I think if I lived in San Diego, I'd drive a 'vert. In Albany, NY, nah.

I live in San Diego and have owned an S2000 and also currently have a Z4 M Roadster in addition to my M4. I"ve owned a roadster for 20 years.

Ideal temps range from the 50s (with jacket on, windows up, seat heater on, and heater going) to upper 70's. When I first got my S2000, I never drove with the top up except when it was raining (rare). I've driven in the upper 30's/lower 40's with a heavy jacket, hat, scarf and gloves, but don't do that anymore. 80's get's hot in the middle of the day if you're sitting at a light.

That said, I'd never own a F83. If you want a convertible, buy a proper convertible, and that's a roadster!
