Grew up in Detroit

"Muscle cars" were usually a brand's base model but with the largest/most powerful engine available. For example:

Pontiac GTO = base Tempest with a 389 cubic inch engine (and 3 2-barrel carbs)
Chevy SS 396 = base Chevelle with a 396 cubic inch engine (and a huge 4-barrel)
Plymouth Road Runner = base Belvedere with a 383 cubic inch engine (also with a big 4-barrel)

These are just 3 of the best 60's muscle cars but probably the 3 best known as "sleepers". Some of these came with vinyl bench seats, and didn't even have power windows.

A BMW could hardly be described as the same kind of base model, but the M3/M4 is the same as a base 3 Series/4 Series with the largest/most powerful engine available, but also with a lot more luxury amenities standard. Using this as a standard, a M3/M4 is a muscle car...kind of. But unlike the original muscle cars, the M3/M4 can also handle, and stop.
Would this have included runs up and down Woodward?

Yup! It was well known that Ford, GM, and Chrysler (the Big 3 at the time) tested their muscle cars on Woodward Avenue on Friday and Saturday nights. You can find lots of stories of that online just by searching. During high school, I lived in Romeo, MI, roughly 30 miles away and I used to drive over to Woodward Avenue just to cruise up and down and see all the cars. The northern turnaround was at Woodward and Long Lake (18 Mile Rd.) This was circa '67-'68 Alas, all I had was a '65 VW Bug, so I wasn't racing anyone!

It was like the film American Graffiti, although our much smaller village was actually more similar to that film. We had a lot of muscle cars in a village with a population of only about 3,000 people.

The Woodward Dream Cruise, held annually, kind of recreates that era and is an ode to the cars of that era. Sadly, I've never been because I haven't back to Michigan during the Woodward Dream Cruise weekend, and it didn't start until 5 years after I moved to San Diego.

My sister and brother-in-law went to Troy High School. He would occasionally let me ride along on his Woodward runs in his ‘69 Z28/RS. They would then take me to Ted’s for an ice cream to keep me quiet with the parents.

Small world! The last Detroit suburb I lived in prior to moving to San Diego was Troy!

Really small world. I briefly lived in the apartments on Coolidge Highway between Albert Ave. and Judson Ave., right where Coolidge curves northeast towards Woodward, just south of 13 Mile.

Went to Big Beaver Elementary and lived in the Somerset area of Troy (years ago, as a kid).

Hey everyone! Great to see some solid F8X presence in Michigan. Looking forward to seeing the cars at any upcoming meets/shows.

Also, I recently opened up a clean, high end automotive styling center in Livonia, MI where I do window tint, PPF, ceramic coating, vinyl wrap, etc.. and I would love to service the M community in Michigan. The shop is called Tint World.
I am having an open house/car meet on Sunday, March 10 from 10-1pm and would love if you guys are willing to come and display the cars and check out what we offer.
Here is the link to the FB event: https://www.facebook.com/events/290892141605460/

Thanks!

Very small. Grew up at 24/Hayes and went to Ike, moved out of state, moved around out of state, then moved home to RO for family.
