Not to get this thread back on track, but...

A month or two my horn went out and it literally sounded like a clown car Talked to the dealer and searched, and this can apparently occur if they get too wet (?), and self-resolve. Sure enough, next day it was back to two-tone M loud.

Cheers

I noticed my car horn sounded somewhat "cartoonish" and then on the way to the dealer to have it looked at it literally stopped working altogether when I needed it to!

I was told there are 2 horns that work in tandem. Both of mine went out a thousand miles apart, the 2nd one going out when i was enroute to the dealership. They said it was a fairly common fault.

Folks are saying the horn sounds wimpy, not very loud, lame, etc.. Maybe it’s just me, but I have found the duel (each wheel well), two tone horns to be pretty hearty sounding. As close as I could get to the source through the engine compartment I could get a 131.5 dB level. With the hood closed, in the same spot, it dropped down to 115 dB, and at two + feet in front of the center of the car at 1 ft high, the sound level was still 115 dB. For reference a fire alarm in your house is 126 dB at 0ft 0 inches away. The horns are pretty loud. With extended exposure, noises that reach a level of 85 dB can cause permanent damage to the hair cells in the inner ear, leading to hearing loss.

They have been to too many rock concerts and can no longer hear the horn.

2017 here. Yeah, just had the low tone horn replaced.

Hilarious as my brother's 2012 F30 also had horn replaced. Getting pretty close to end of production for this chassis and this thing is still going out.

For future reference here is the part #

When I first got my S2000 I honked the horn and it was the most pathetic sounding horn I had ever heard. Literally, it sounded like the Road Runner cartoons, "meep, meep". The car was very small and I would have these huge Ford Excrements next to me who apparently couldn't see me and the horn was no deterrent to them just gliding into my lane.

I bought some dual Hella electric horns from Griot's Garage, and problem solved! The next time one of those behemoths drifted into my lane, I blasted the horn and they thought a semi was bearing down on them. I literally would watch them jump in their seat! Very satisfying!

That was almost 20 years ago and Griot's still has them: https://www.griotsgarage.com/product...e=&from=Search

I don’t think anyone is gonna be stuck in the engine anytime soon while driving or with the hood open unless they are teenagers sticking there head in there admiring the car then I’ll use the 131.5 on them that should do it

I think my horn is broken I’ve got 15’ M4 I bought the car last March with 38k on it now I got 45k on it the horn has always been the same and never changed but it sounds like a clown car and it wasn’t really loud so I’m guessing my low tone horn is out or I just have the M4 clown car now.

Anyone have a quote on the low tone horn replacement and install from Bmw?

My low tone horn blew out last spring. The dealership replaced both horns and said it was extremely common on this platform.

I guarantee no one cares what the horn sounds like when it’s coming from my car. It’s like laughing at Mike Tyson because his voice isn’t that deep.
