Car needs a new differential

I was hearing a siren noise every time I was driving the car I thought cops were chasing me lol it wasn’t so bad so I never really made it a big deal because Once the car was fully warmed up the noise wasn’t so loud so I took it to the dealer and have them look at it I was thinking maybe an oil change to the differential would solve the problem so I got a phone call from my sa today to tell me they ordered me a dif
Has anybody ever have a problem like that

I have whining in 4th 5th and 6th gears under light throttle. Not loud like police, but definitely noticeable. I also had a slight leak in the passenger side seal I had the dealer fix last year. But I haven't pushed at the dealer yet to have the diff fully checked out.

I had this problem maybe 3 months ago. Full differential replacement and the car laid out for a week. The first dealer i took it to said that the noise is normal because the GTS has less sound insulation. So i took it for a second opinion and took the foreman of the second shop for a drive. Within 10 minutes he said, we need to replace this diff asap.

It’s a long run on joke.
It wasn’t that funny, period.
That poster needs to comma down and not get exclamatory over things.

I have a similar type of issue, let me know if these symptoms sound familiar. I took it in as part of my 1200 mile service, and the tech definitely said he heard it, but they "didn't find anything during the service".

It's a subtle but definitely noticeable hum/whistle/whine type sound for lack of better description. It's noticeable at idle, and becomes most noticeable at speed around 3500-4500 RPMs.

I also notice a burning plastic type smell every couple drives - at first I thought it was just new car burning off extra grease as part of production, but now at 3,500 miles, I don't think I should be smelling it anymore....Not sure if it's related.

I am having difficulty getting BMW to acknowledge the noise. The dealer foreman said I can hear it, but the regional representative overruled the dealer's opinion stating it is normal. This is my 2nd F80, 2016 and now a 2018. My 2016 did not make whine noises.
This is complete BS. Can someone help me with this same differential whine issue. What dealers did you get your diffs replaced? Can someone provide dealer names and service employees names? I would like to call them and leverege your case to help my cause.

My ‘18 M3 had a similar smell after most drives. My car now has 17K kilometers and the smell just recently abated a few months ago. Some of the plastics that are exposed to engine heat take a long time to outgas. As long as you’re not seeing any fluid loss, you should be fine.

You also could have drove over a plastic bag and it’s melting against your exhaust.
