It'll be remembered by BMW as the most sold M3/M4 of all time, muting all the hate towards the car, because quite frankly, that's a win for the manufacturer

I switch cars all the time, but the F80 has been with me since it launched.
The combination of a newer performance car with 4doors and manual transmission is a great combination. I did have MPE installed, but otherwise my only options were SO leather, 6MT, 19” wheels, and Harmon Kardon radio. The car feels light and agile for a modern sedan, the chassis is so good, it wants to play. It has loads of room and has been incredibly reliable. As someone that owns multiple cars, I like the sound being unique, TBH. I also do not compare this car to my old E46, this is the modern E39 M5, if you want an E46 comparable, get an M2. I do think the more simple versions of this car will age better, I saw a Mineral Grey with 18” stock wheels the other day (no mods) and it was a stunning example of classic BMW, IMO. Subtle aggression ..... |

Ill remember it as the generation where factory customization really exploded. There are so many M performance parts available and there are wayyyyyyy more individual color builds than previous generations.
Of course as others have mentioned the leap in performance from the E90M was gigantic and much more pronounced than prior generations. I remember the first time a buddy gave me a ride in his new 2015 M3 I was blown away by the shear speed and power. It felt night and day faster than my E90 M3. |

Quite positively but I think some, including myself, will always feel it was noticeably more "refined" than all of its predecessors, and that's a bad thing.

I think this car is way WAY more hard-edged than the E9XM. The previous gen was the plush version.... smoothest riding, lowest amount of NVH, etc. The F80 reminds me of the E46M - rowdy and racey.

Maybe it's because I haven't driven the ZCP but the '15s and '16s I drove were very isolating, did not feel like their predecessors at all. Most notably the steering was muted and artificially weighted...video game like.

"Refined" is definitely NOT a word I would use to describe the F8X. Which one did you have and how long did you drive it?

...which is why most of us keep the steering in Comfort mode both on and off the track. Most car reviews and all the M School instructors agree. It's got the best feel and not a lot of the artificial weight. My LCI '16 F80's steering felt much better with aftermarket suspension and I kept it in comfort. My M3 CS feels just right, almost to the point where I might go to Sport because it's improved since.

Drove many of the earlier models, pops leased one too but also found the driving experience to be "muted." But at his age he was fine with something more refined.

Basically says it feels better than the E92 which was "artificial". He also leaves it in Comfort. Driving the car in MDM mode or better yet completely off and the driving experience is definitely not muted. It's downright exciting and might even scare the sht out of most of us. It's very easy to toss this car around. I must admit though, that most people never take advantage of or even go near to the point where the F8X where it shines: at the limit. Watch that video of Chris Harris kicking the rear out at almost every turn with the right foot and I don't think anyone can say that it's muted.

BUT - I found the E9XM steering weight to feel more artificial than the F80 as it was super crazy light at slow speeds and then at about 25mph it ramped up quickly and got very heavy. The F80 has a much more subtle/linear ramp up in weight and I prefer it. I drive my ZCP in the Sport setting (middle) as I find that gives the most natural weight... slightly on the heavy side, which I like. Comfort is slightly on the lighter side. Regarding refinement - where the F80 shines is that its structure is crazy rigid and so there is almost zero quiver/shiver over bumps. So this gives the car a very precise/hard edge but at the same time cuts down on ancillary vibrations that the older cars have. So in this sense you could say it's more refined but I would most certainly never, in a million years, call the F80 a refined vehicle in the traditional sense. It floods the cabin with sound and vibration and feel.... driving over a nickel would be noticeable in this thing, at least the ZCPs.

i'd say the f80 is pretty refined. I mean they had to pump sound in so you could actually hear something. But its all relative. Driving my 458 or FRS more than an hour would give me a headache because there is almost no sound deadening at all.
But I think to those that say it feels 'isolated' or numb... you just have to drive it harder. The car has much higher limits than previous M3s and if you don't push it then its going to feel boring. Its not like the e92 where you can just floor it from 3-5k, barely accelerating, shift, and bask in that great v8 sound.

After unplugging the active sound and getting used to it absence, I'm surprised how loud the car really is. It would've been fine without it, I think, at least with the competition package exhaust. I never got around to unplugging the active sound on my 2015 so I can't really compare.

Here's the 39th time I've posted the same thing - active sound is FAKE and an eM BARE ass flavor mint. That's the one thing the F8x gen will wish is forgotten. |

And with the windows down there is a substantial mid-range shriek outside the car.

Anyhow I didn't mean to create such a stir lol. F80 will certainly be remembered fondly and is easily one of BMW's best looking cars ever. |
