Question Suggestions for Inexpensive Sound Improvement

Hi,

I have an F80 Competition that's completely stock. I'd like to add a bit more deep sound and maybe some additional pops (but nothing crazy).

I have a baby so I need it to be reasonable and not drone and also live in a state where I can't do anything to the cats etc for inspection reasons and I want it to be relatively inexpensive.

What do you guys recommend ?

From what I've been able to read, some people recommend the AA resonated midpipe for sound. And if I'm correct, I can code in the pops for free?

I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Thanks for any advice!

AA single midpipe produces a deeper sound. EL is overrrated imo.

It may burble with just the midpipe. I never sought it out but I had the AA midpipe with ZCP exhaust on my F82 before and it burbled on a stage 1 tune which I didn't set it for. Currently in an F80, no tune, AA single midpipe and Dinan axleback which also still burbles. No aggressive pops though.

First do the AA Single Midpipe (not the Equal Length) which has non-resonated extensions. See how you like that first.

If you want (more) burbles after hearing the AA Single then you buy a used Bootmod3 license and turn on ZCP, CS or GTS burbles.

Equal length imo, the single midpipe just produced a deeper version of the same terrible exhaust note. 'Polishing a turd'

Highly subjective subject so tough to point out a perfect solution.

OP asked to add a bit more deeper sound. The EL does not deepen the tone, even though you like it’s’ sound…

Thanks for all the excellent replies everyone.

TopJimmy:

Do you think non-resonated will be too loud?

I do want a bit more sound, but like I said nothing crazy to wake the neighborhood.

The EL is significantly more expensive than AA single midpipe so I don't know if that's worth it anyways.

No, it won’t be too loud. The sound will be deeper but you can always keep valves closed by using Efficient mode.

Jimmy is spot on, I added downpipes as well since I was in there and I think it sounds great!

Hijacking this thread. I've been wanting to do a midpipe but got confirmation emissions testing also performs a visual and they look for 4 cats. They are under video surveillance and have to take pictures. This is in SLC. It sucks, I know and I don't want to hassle with taking it on/off to renew registration.

Is there anything catback that can help with the rasp and deeper tone?

If they do a visual check and must see 4 cats then stick with stock exhaust. Changing just the rear can will not lower the tone. Most aftermarket rear sections have a smaller can so tone could go up.

So will a midpipe cause any CEL ? Because while my state doesn't specifically do any visual inspection underneath, a CEL or monitors not ready will trigger emissions fail. It's MA.

Midpipe does not cause a CEL.

AWE Switchpath and Track Exhaust starts after the secondary cats. So EPA friendly.

Mid pipe is a quick swap. If you have the complete mpe mid pipe and muffler I didn't find it raspy.

it does not.

You can also improve the sound by pairing the single midpipe with the active autowerke catted downpipes. no check engine light either with these downpipes and you get a significant increase in sound.

I would personally go with the AWE switchpath. Keeps you legal and sounds great. Still has valves and when they are open its much louder than stock open. With closed it's quiet.
