Are you referring to the core of the expansion tank or the core of the charge cooler?
Core of the charge air cooler, allowing it to flow through the chargepipe, past the throttle body, and directly into the intake manifold

Thanks for the reply. I’m hoping the dealer warranties it.

What does the 2k repair entail?

Is it just replacing the IC unit itself? Or does it include some other repairs as well? If the core leaked and got into the intake, do they clean the intake of coolant?

Ok very odd.

I just got a call from my service advisor that after doing three leakdown tests that my car was fine and there were no leaks. They said to come by and pick up the car and everything should be fine.

Being late, I’ll pick it up in the morning and I’ll check when I get there.

Maybe something was loose and now it’s tight after they put everything together?

So odd as I have photos showing a noticeable loss of intercooler coolant overnight.

Thoughts?

They don't want to replace it simple

Possibly. Very odd that they wouldn’t want to. Don’t the dealers make money when they service these cars?

For some it's not worth their time, tell them to pull the chargepipe off (it's small) and have them inspect the piping/throttle body, from my pic on the first page the piping will have the white residue on it.

After what my SA told me today, I may be on the same boat. Are you still leaking at all?

I just checked it again. It was low.

I refilled it on 21NOV2018 when it threw the code for the charge cooler reservoir running dry. They did a leakdown on 28NOV2018 and didn't find a leak anywhere. Pulled the cold side chargepipe off and I didn't see anything. Checked it again a week before Christmas and it was marginally low but not terrible (car was still kind of hot).

I just added about 2oz by weight of mixed coolant/DW. I'll check it again this weekend and if it's low again it's going in for another leakdown and then I'm just going to replace the chargecooler.

The car has 68,500 miles on it at this point, so it's well out of warranty.

If you do, please do a DIY as it seems a few of us are going to be doing the same.

While my car is in service for a leaking turbo, I had asked my SA to check the expansion tank to see if it is also low on coolant. I had had this issue of my car giving me a low coolant warning before 1 year ago, in which they just topped it off. After all of this news I was curious to have them check while I'm almost out of warranty.

I just got a text from him saying that they're going to replace the "intercooler" for the low coolant, although I'm guessing he means charge cooler.

Yes they're the same thing, just two different terms used.

I'll just check my charge cooler for "coldness" after a few hard drives home and the coolant on a regular basis. Glad this got spotted though!

I may be misunderstanding the whole "charge cooler being cold" thing. Anything under the hood is bound to be hot after driving correct? Is that thing supposed to magically be cool to the touch after driving?? What am I missing here?

It's water cooled, cold water/coolant is being recirculated and it's about 50 degrees. Drive your car hard and feel the charge air cooler you will be surprised, that's why the F8x platform can do back to back pulls because heatsoak is near to non existent until you push the car beyond stock power

It is thermodynamics (specifically heat transfer) at work and why a water/air intercooler system (also called a charge cooler system) is the method of choice over air/air intercooler systems - water is more efficeint at removing heat. The supercharger on my E46 M3 track car uses a water/air system and is also cool to the touch as well even when driving hard on the track in 90+ deg F heat. The only down side to air/water systems compared to air/air systems is that air/water systems are more complex and therfore have more components that can break - which is what we are apparently seeing some of right now with this charge cooler leakage issue. If an air/air heat exchanger had a leak in the core, it probably wouldn't even be noticed.

It does seem weird that anything under the hood would be "cool to the touch" after driving hard - but it is just physics doing its thing to help us go faster (and keep the engine from blowing up) .

Not hard at all unless you are 4 feet tall. Don't stand in front of the car, stand on the passenger side and just look down using a flashlight. You don't need to be right on top of it, just need to see that yellow indicator which is perfectly visible when leaning over from the passenger side.
