ORIGINAL POST - 02/2016 - POWER STOP Z16 PADS

http://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo....596256&jsn=261

I wanted to make a thread specifically on the Power Stop ceramic brake pads along with some basic information.

PART #
FRONT: 161609
REAR: 161656

INFORMATION
Those that have the standard F8X brakes know that the OEM pads produce an obscene amount of brake dust that gets caked onto the wheels. The Power Stop ceramic pads are direct replacement pads for the standard OEM versions. Here is some info on ceramic pads http://www.tirerack.com/brakes/tech/....jsp?techid=88 (thanks CreoUCLA )

For those that have done the pad swap, please feel free to contribute reviews and thoughts!

WHERE TO BUY
The cheapest I've found online is from Rockauto.com. Here are the links to the pads.
FRONT: http://www.rockauto.com/en/partsearch/?partnum=16-1609
REAR : http://www.rockauto.com/en/partsearch/?partnum=161656

Did the swap this weekend, about 3 hours start to finish but that included wheel cleaning and waxing. Install was very easy, pads are exactly as oem pads including sensor slots so no issues. I followed bedding recommendations from Powerstop (5 stops hard-moderate 40mph-10mph, 5 stops moderate 35-5mph, no resting between, then, drive without braking much or stopping for about 10 min. Result was: hard to tell difference between the ceramic and steel, maybe a tad less bite, brakes are still excellent, no noise at all, and VERY little light gray dust after an hours drive around town. Going to do the x5 next, it's a black dust fiend.

I've had my Power Stop ceramic pads installed for a few days now, and the wheels stay much cleaner (as compared to the stock pads). Initial bite is slightly less than the stock pads, but I've gotten used to the pedal feel of them already.

Install was very easy/straight-forward.

For the break in process, I did 10 stops from 50-60mph down to 10-5mph going down a mountain.. I figured I was going to start feeling brake fade but surprisingly, I didn't. Overall these pads do a great job for daily driving, but to me I feel they don't bite as hard as OEM pads. The trade off of less bite for clean rims is worth it! For those worried about not enough bite, these pads still engage ABS upon heavy braking, so there is still enough bite.

Worst part about installing these is chipping some paint off the back of the caliper when hammering the pins back in (good thing is you can't see it). My OCD kicked in to make sure those damn pins were all the way back in.. Chipped paint > pads falling out

Thank you exo for organizing this thread. I am also loving the pads, the wheels has been staying much cleaner after the installed. For me, i cant really notice the braking difference. But i feel there is definitely trade off somewhere.

My only complaint is I do get slight noise from the rears during cold start. Once the rotor/pad warm up, the noise will go away which usually take no more than few times stepping on the brake pedal.

I also get a squeal when I first apply the brake after the car has been sitting in cold temperature for a few hours. After the first squeal, it's gone. I didn't apply any of the anti-sequeal paste when I swapped mine. I'll probably apply the paste next time I wrench on the car.

Had the fronts when they first came out, then the rears on just recently. They are awesome. NO brake dust and stopping it very similar to stock. I haven't tried them for the track but I'm assuming you should be using track specific pads anyway. I did go up and down the Rim of The World Highway several times and had no issues with fade during heavy braking. The rears do have some squealing but after bedding them properly it has completely vanished.

I applied a couple dabs of Napa Sil-Glyde to the backs of all the pads when I installed mine. No noise so far...

Lol. This is like saying my akra exhaust gave me 20 hp according to my butt dyno.

Less dust - sure. Stopping performance? Totally unknown.

Disagree. I drove down the street this morning, applied the brakes before the stop sign at the intersection, and the car stopped.

I haven't thought about changing brake pads but I do love a clean wheel. Are these the all around best ceramic pads for our cars? It's a pretty inexpensive option though I don't know what it will cost to have them put on my an Auto shop, hopefully not more than $50. I'll call a few places before ordering, just wanted to know if there were so other options. My car is a lease so as long as the sensors work and they won't wear out under normal driving in 20k miles.

Edit: I've got quotes from $150-450(BMW dealer) for install. I don't really feel comfortable changing them myself even though it looks relatively simply.

Not surprised. It's not an insignificant amount of work. With a 4 post lift though, should be a 1-hr job. Probably 3 hours if it's your first time. It's easier than you might think. If you have the tools, you should go it alone, Hoss.

It's actually quite easy to change the pads. Only took me about half an hour. In a nut shell, you just have to remove the 2 pins and the pads just slide out. With a 4 post lift, the pad swap would probably take 20 min or less. But I understand the trepidation.

I am going to do these brake pads. Tired of fighting the dust.

For the hell of it I'm going to do some private stopping distance tests before and after.

It takes less time to install the pads than it does to clean the wheels.

Just got my pads today, called a few other places found a shop that I think knows what they're doing and will change them all for $180. I'm tempted to go buy a jack and do it myself, I realize how simple it is but I can't afford for something to go wrong or not install it correctly, it's the brakes!

whoever does it make sure they clean BOTH surfaces well. Then bed those pads properly.
