2018 M3 - minor damage on carfax - big deal?

Hi,

Not sure if specific thread for this...

I have a deposit down on a 2018 M3 comp 6MT pretty fully optioned on vroom - links below for listing and carfax. I think fair deal BUT there is minor damage on the carfax.

No accident* just minor damange***.

How big of a deal for resale down the road? Deal breaker? Car is perfect spec for me otherwise. Pictures look perfect and carfax doesn't show repair of vehicle.

Thoughts?

It's hard to say about how it'll affect resale because you aren't the one that caused the damage and have pictures to show how "minor" the damage was. I have never bought a car off vroom before so I don't know if you have seen the damage if it was just a repaint or was the entire bumper replaced. You can kinda tell from the mounting points to see witness marks.

But it's not like the car is a rare car or anything so I wouldn't bank on the car with a high resale value in the future -- probably wouldn't make a huge difference.

Agreed. I will try to gather more info from Vroom regarding the incident. Could be anything from insurance claim regarding curb rash or front bumper damage from hitting a parking divider.

I do think this exact spec is not as common given that it is a 6MT + individual color + comp. I think I will roll the dice, get it inspected and deal with it when it gets here.

Thanks!

Tanzanite is just as hard to keep clean. But Tanzanite/Silverstone is rarer than BSM/Silverstone. And that car is $7K more than the Vroom one so not a good deal.

I wouldn't worry about it. I had a Focus RS that someone did a hit and run while I was in the vehicle. I had to pay my deductible to fix it. The damage was roughly $1200. When I traded it in for my last car(Scatpack Charger) the guy at the dodge dealership asked what happened and when he saw the damage was practically minor he brushed it off and gave me full NADA/KBB value.

100% more unique color combo and black is a dealbreaker regardless of price for me. I've had 2 black cars before (2012 WRX and 2016 Chevy SS 6MT) and looking for a special* color combo.

I actually haven't seen the Tanzanite Blue in person but from pictures it looks amazing. A deep color that pops in direct light but isn't as flashy as Yas Marina Blue which was my previous 1st choice.

Great to hear! I'm hoping it will be a non issue years down the road as well.

Also used to have a Focus RS by the way, ditched it in 9 months and 13k miles due to how miserably uncomfortable that car was. Still one of the best handling cars I have ever driven though.

Wrapping is definitely a thing but I personally don't think a wrap will ever give off the depth of a color that was naturally painted.

Also in terms of resale and exclusivity, individual M colors can't be beat. I know TB is one of the more common ones but still a big plus in my opinion compared to the standard Black, AW, MG, etc.

Will for sure look into ceramic coating upon delivery

I think you'll be good bro! They were fun, but definitely a bit uncomfortable(I'm 6'3" so it got a bit cramped).I too ditched it around 14 months and 12,000 miles. I was a bit surprised by how much pep it had though

if you personally feel like this is "the car" and you need to have it simply buy it. the value will go up if anything and you won't be disappointed with the way the f80 drives. NO REGRETS and NEVER LOOK BACK cant wait to see photos

True that! My 2015 F80 is Tanzanite with Silverstone, a lease turn-in that belonged to one of the local dealership's sons. Had 25K miles on it after 3 years, obvioiusly well-cared-for, and only minor scratches here and there. As far as I know, it's the only Tanzanite M3 sold by this dealership in the surrounding area. I'd definitely do the inspection and buy it if there's no signiricant unreported issues.

Obvisouly inspect the front bumper for a repaint, but it isn't a huge concern IMO. A lot of cars that had something like a small scratch fixed shows up as minor damage now. My concern is the maintenance. The 20k oil and filter change was done at valvoline, which isn't great and who knows if they skipped other items like brake fluid.

Definitely going to get it inspected first thing by my trusted indie mechanic I've used for years that specializes in BMWs. If inspection checks out I plan on doing all fresh fluids upon delivery to be on safe side. The oil change at Valvoline doesn't surprise me a whole lot if the previous owner knew he was going to offload it in the short term. Not ideal obviously. If the car doesn't pass inspection it'll get returned for the shipping fee of ~ $600 but I'm optimistic. My indie guy is a straight shooter and I trust him.

I'm actually opting for the Vroom extended warranty in addition to the 1y remaining factory warranty... $1250 for an additional 48mo and 48k miles which covers a bunch of stuff from basic drivetrain to the electronic driving aides + braking, steering, cooling, etc. Safeguard services their warranties and they have some of the better reviews for 3rd party contracts. I'm gonna be honest, I had 0 intention of getting one since it was initially $2k but $1250 for peace of mind is worth it to me. If I cancel early it gets prorated. I've spent more money on worse things before, $GME anyone???

The car is perfect to me in everyway otherwise. I say this now because I go through cars quickly (2-3y) but how much better does it get after this? 911? Or you gotta spend 100k+ for near supercar territory.

7-14 days for delivery and I will be counting down the minutes.

Keep y'all posted.

It's finally here! Car came this morning.

I did have it checked out by my local indie mechanic and he said the car is super clean, no issues he can see mechanically. It drives great. This is the 3rd or 4th M3 I drove since I started shopping and is by far in the best condition (mostly 2015-2016s with 30-35k miles, all 6MT). 6MT is so smooth. Car drives like new. Interior looks like new minus some surface scratches on the climate control screen and some minor drivers side bolster wear. Don't think back seats were ever used.

Cosmetically - some of the driver's side bumper was painted. They did a nice job painting (matches great even in direct sunlight with the metallic flakes) but you can see some tape residue and overspray on the bottom of the headlight. Mechanics best guess is that previous owner nicked a parking divider and scratched it up. Found some yellow residue on the bottom with a deep scrape but that could also be from normal driving with low clearance. No evidence of them removing the bumper / hood or replacing any parts based on the tape lines and overspray on underside of headlight. Panel gaps line up perfect. Some rock chips from highway but to be expected with a used car. If I want it perfect I can remove the whole bumper and have painted by a reputable shop and fix all the scrapes, chips, etc. We'll see.

I'm surprised it made its way on the carfax. Shop must have reported it. If it wasn't reported I think I'd still notice because I'm OCD with my cars but if you don't know what you're looking for I doubt it. Especially from more than a foot away.

Car is staying with me and I can't wait to put a ton of miles on it. This one might stay around until the wheels fall off which hopefully won't be for a long time. Vroom overall was a positive experience. Easy to work with and staff is so friendly but their communication is less than adequate. Going radio silent after putting a decent amount of money down without giving a delivery date doesn't exactly inspire confidence. Once I had a date (money wired Thurs, received a date on Tues) it was smooth again.

So pumped!

Very jealous. It looks great. It would have been mine if you were 1 day slower to click buy. Enjoy it!
