I think that is the Metzger engine, that now is decomissioned from 911 use. The new flat 6 doesn't have that "rattly, metallic" sound.

I am educated as an auto mechanic and then went to engineering school afterwards. My daytime job is 90% to do with modified vehicles or amateur built vehicles... Involving cars as differing as Hot Rods, muscle cars, '50ies US cars, modified BMW's (mostly conversions like doing a M3 out of a 320i or turbo conversions), chip tuning, engine management etc. I know more about some subjects than others though

I was "brought up" on Hot Rod Magazine, 5.0 Mustang, Fast Ford, Performance Ford, EVO, CAR, Sport Auto and Auto Motor & Sport Magazines

I've been to a few "interesting" places such as Koenigsegg, Caterham, Cosworth (was quite impressive to see their F1 engines on the dyno.. ) and hopefully I'll be visiting with some "interesting" people in Germany later this year...

I'm just a regular guy that is quite interested in cars and engines, and am fortunate enough to be able to have that as a daytime job, that's all

There is actually one other way of seeing this which I realized. The current generation of M3 and the ex M5 (so E9X and E60 Ms) both had pretty decent sounding exhausts that were somewhat similar. The next generation is a different story, there is going to be a massive gap in sound between the new M3/M4 and M5. I loved how my piece of crap 70k M3 could sound as good as the 6 figure M5, but not anymore

It will sound much better in person. I remember thinking the same thing about F10 M5 watching videos until I heard one in person. Ok it's no V10 but it still sounds good.

True but also put a V10 M5 vs the F10 and the F10 will blow past it, watch a few of the videos, that is how the new M3 will be performing as well. Gotta love turbos

Oh I completely agree. I was purely talking about engine and exhaust noise.

I own one, its expensive to maintain if you track/drive it alot. The tires/breaks/fulids etc.. Its an amazing car but its robotic in every aspect and it just feels like the car is driving and not you. The 2015 GTR is going to be one hell of a car (black edition) but it will have a 115k + price tag. I never found the GTR to be a looker, its a freak of a car for sure in performance and you fall in love the second you drive it.

The car is a monster, for sure, but I can get that robotic feel from a good simulator (where I don't have to fret about sidechecking competitors into the wall at 140mph haha). The exterior is good for a Nissan, the interior is gaudy and awful. Again, mucho respect for performance, just didn't appeal to me from an aesthetic, comfort and driving dynamics point of view enough to want to own one.
