Have friends with lift and stuff, or someone geek out on cars. Also this is the place for DIY instructions. F80 too new right now, but pretty sure down the road you will find DIY everywhere, especially for it's popularity. I've been maintaining my e39 M5, now it has 160k miles and I have a whole forum of rich DIY info. Yea sometimes sensors goes out, yea my power steering kept on leaking. But no biggy cuz people eventually will know how to deal with it.
All you need is if you are willing to get your hand dirty. I mean like hella dirty lol

No one really knows at this point. It's definitely not a lexus in that there have been major issues that are luckily not systemic. Given the various DCT replacements and lemon laws, however - I do question the long term reliability. That's my opinion however.

In my opinion, I think only the immediately previous generation prior to the one being compared, should be, in terms of reliability. For style and performance, sure, compare any generation but, a car with 75% less computers just isn't comparable with respect to future reliability.

I also think blanket statements like, don't get an extended service contract, shouldn't be made. Everyone should be allowed do their own research and make an informed decision without bias.

Sorry, I am a libra

Then the rotors were warping and needed to be replaced. $3,000. AC was getting weak so I looked at Autotrader. Similar cars were going for $25-$32K. With the engine light coming on, I wanted to drop dat shit like a hot potato lol. At the height of the recession I was only offered $23k. So I hung on. The new X5's looked, drove way better and consumed less gas. I was done. Sold it for $25k. Never again.
that's interesting.

I usually buy cars slightly used.

example bought a 2008 c63 with 18k miles @ 49.5k out the door.

drove it for 3 years, just oil changes and tires. also cost of insuring and registering an older vehicle is cheaper than new.

sold it for 29k with approx 35k miles.

if i had leased a new one, it would have been 800-900 bucks a month plus the initial down payment, plus mileage restrictions, plus insurance and registration on a new vehicle.

i usually put a lot of miles on cars i own, but this car was no fun to me.

i have plenty of other examples where buying a slightly used car makes so much sense compared to new or leasing it.

yea but so far the used f80s i've seen the pricing is horrible. just go to the for sale classified in the forums. for the prices these people are asking which is usually very close to what I can get for a new f80 and it also includes the maintenance plan.

I suspect many of those sensors are there to hit emissions standards. I wonder how much better off the global environment is then when all things are considered.

I had my last two cars for eight years. This M3 is such an outstanding machine it causes me no pause at all to say I will have it for at least the same amount of time.

I also have no doubt the next generation of M cars will be 'better' than mine. However, that will not a) make me want to get a new one b) like the one I have any less. I'm very good at getting what I want the first time around with no regrets after the purchase.

I have no doubt the car will last LONG if taken care of and treated right.

I've seen, and owned a pristine 89 M3 and a 96 M3 that looked like they came right out of the factory - but seen downright destroyed ones as well. Every single one I've seen is a direct representation of the owner and how they treat what they own...

Fact of the matter is, take care of it and it will last you forever and look it as well. The thrashed, beat to crap, falling apart BMWs you see out there were not - probably leased, beat to shit, not maintained correctly, then when the dealer got it back at end of lease sold it to another person who promptly did the same.

Seen it time and time again that people buy BMWs and don't do the required maint or upkeep because "it's a BMW, I shouldn't have to for what I paid".

Lastly, these aren't Toyotas that you can put fuel in and drive through the wash every now and then, and expect no further maintenance but oil and tires.

EDIT: Oh, and people need to stop looking at cars as an "asset" - they're an expense and a liability. Just admit it to yourself and all will be OK

Yes it is more prone to problems but the fact that you will encounter them until the car is really old is low. and when things break you replace them.
I can share all the info you want on the oil sensor problem I had with my F82.

All car have issues. To think these will last forever is very optimistic. When I'm 80, I want a Lexus anyway so I block all traffic.

This is the first time I hear about oil level sensor problem and I am on these forums a lot. Regardless, there are weak components on these cars that are known to have problems traditionally like DCT and turbos but even then it is not happening on most cars. All I was saying is that these cars are generally reliable and with recommended maintenance will last a long time. Of course at some point, assume in 15-20 years, maintenance and occasional break downs may cost too much when comparing to value of the car. Of course in 20 years we will be flying in saucers so not sure who will need an F80, maybe a museum...

No. The bs handling is a must for this task.

You're gonna suck at being a road block if you are this out of it at your age. Stick with M's!

No, that would mean a Porsche in Seattle area.

I already have an Audi, so I'm set for life anyway.
